One of the first true closers that I remember. Well he and Rollie Fingers. Watched him a lot as a cubbie on WGN back in the day too.

He didn't invent the split finger, but he mastered the hell out of it and it's one of the most effective pitches in baseball still today. One of many reasons he's in the Hall of Fame.

Yes. He was the most feared pitcher in the National League for a few years. One of the last of the old school closers. Whitey Herzog had a 7-out limit for him. They'd bring him in to get out of a jam in the 7th inning and it was game over.
