Dawn Staley praises Shane Beamer, South Carolina football during spring game
In a show of support for her fellow South Carolina coach, women's basketball coach Dawn Staley was in attendance for Shane Beamer's spring game.
Sigh.....yet another post about what DS has supposedly not done in a post that Talks about how vigorously she supports so many things within the athletic department.I noted no comment on the baseball/softball teams. DS was in Omaha in 2010.
What, in my statement, did I state which she has not done?Sigh.....yet another post about what DS has supposedly not done in a post that Talks about how vigorously she supports so many things within the athletic department.
What, in my statement, did I state which she has not done?
DS is supportive of the endeavors of the athletic department. She is friends with Beverly Smith, don’t know about Kingston.
DS’s job is BB coach, she is not the AD. She is not responsible to be the cheerleader for every program in the athletic department. She hasn’t commented on our elite 8 women’s soccer season(she did show up at their fundraiser a year ago and damn near bought everything at the silent auction) either golf or tennis program, either volleyball program, the equestrian team or track and field. She has made no statement on the fact that we had a record number of athletes make honor roll.
Why ding her for things that are not in her job expectations? And why ding her about an article showing her support for another team in the department?
My bad, apologizesI did not ding DS. To the contrary, I have pointed out in several threads that she was at Rosenblatt (in the press box next to Spurrier) when Baseball won the national title in 2010.
Actually, your response is in support of my assertion - DS has been supportive of several non-WBB programs at USC, not just football. The dinging is that the article mentioned nothing about her support for other sports at USC not named football. I was dinging the author of the article, not DS.
Certainly, the head coach has to look out for their own program #1, but I think it's good to see coaches publicly support other programs at the school. I recall the major discord between MBB and football at USC back in the 70s, and I want USC to stay far away from that.
Agree, I don't see how she could be asked to do more or criticized for what she has done.I've been vocal about Dawn's politics but she's a great coach. She's also an icon in her sport and the #1 advocate for the University of South Carolina. She's a workaholic and goes out of the way to support the other coaches and teams.

It appears that I was not sufficiently specific in my comments, and you are not the only respondent who misread what I was trying to convey. I agree with you that it would have been impolite for DS to have spoken about any sport other than football (and maybe she gets a pass if she mentions WBB briefly). It was a football spring game. She and her program was honored during the spring game for their accomplishments this past season. For her to bring up other athletic programs not being honored would be like a host of a party inviting someone to it, and that someone bringing along friends of their own NOT invited, without the host's permission. It is just rude.
But I have witnessed DS honoring many other USC non-revenue sports every year: she has done TONS of things for Coach Smith's softball teams, for the women's soccer teams, for the volleyball teams, etc. As far as the softball team, DS has trown out the ball before games many times, and Coach Smith I believe has looked after DS's pet dog Champ MANY times, while Staley and her team have been out of town during past seasons. SO, I think your statement implies much that simply is not true.
While I can't recall many occasions of DS or her teams involved with things regarding the Baseball program, I do know that both Kingston and DS have tweeted congratulations to each other for big wins during their programs' seasons for quite a while. So again, I think your comment is quite discolored from the truth.....
Actually, after re-reading my response, I realized it was not specific enough, and I can see why some reader thought I was criticizing DS and not the author of the article. Thus I owe you an apology for making you go down that rabbit hole.My bad, apologizes
