Is this the weakest team PSU has played in recent history? We've always played MAC teams but I can't remember a game like this. Will there even be a betting line?

Then we play UMass. Is it just me or are most of the OOC games really bad this year?

We played Villanova a few years ago, and our offensive line was offensive. They couldn’t get a push all day. Concrete for feet.
So was Clifford that game. I was there. He was totally not seeing WIDE open TEs and RBs on short to intermediate routes. It was like he couldn’t see them. He was just throwing deep. At one point, a wide open Strange watched a deep incomplete pass and threw his hands up and walked off the field.

Don't sleep on ZooMass. They are "vaunted." Well, not so much; they gave up 59 points to Auburn. But they did beat New Mexico State, so they are probably no longer the worst team in FBS.

Delaware played well against Stony Brook last weekend. They are not a bad team. They won’t beat us, but they will play hard and have a good passing game. They are well coached. Nevertheless it should be out of hand by the third quarter. 45-14

Stony Brook is a yardstick? Academically, maybe. In football, no.

key is for the Penn State guys to see it as a real game. Deleware will play as a super bowl. the Nova game was a lot like that.

No - Delaware is not a bad team, but a lot worse than us of course. Stony Brook is bad (in football), but well regarded academically. Delaware is the yardstick in football and we will measure up well, but they are decent.

Stony Brook is not the yardstick, but if we measure ourselves against them, we loose by a lot if you look at the cost vs quality of their education, especially their medical and dental schools. It’s rapidly becoming the flagship program of the New York State system.

Tomorrow's presser, all questions will address the WV game. Franklin will get po'd, citing we're playing Delaware this weekend. The reporters will also ask about injuries.

Stony Brook is on our 3D’s list of college visits. Marine Science.

One of my children got her PhD at SBU. She turned down offers from Penn State and a few other Big10 schools because SBU had a better quality PhD program. As it turned out she made the right decision.

I won't anticipate a virtuoso performance vs. Delaware either. It'll be a business like approach all week, perhaps akin to the days leading up to the spring game. The players aren't fools and coaches aren't going to lose credibility trying to put the fear of Delaware in their heads. It's a glorified scrimmage where weaknesses will hopefully be ironed out and snaps will be spread around. A chance to further evaluate the roster against guys wearing a different color jersey.

Delaware did beat Navy last year (although Navy wasn't very good). They also won a playoff game. I think they will put up a fight early on before getting steamrolled.

UD holds a special place with my wife and me. We lived in Delaware years ago, and my wife worked in one of the academic departments. It was a great job, as she worked with nice people, the Dean included. Not the a$$hole academic types one sometimes comes across. Nice campus. We liked walking around Newark (New-ark). Some good coffee shops back then.

Last FCS team PSU played was just 2 years ago (Villanova - which was a good FCS team. Aside from losing to PSU, lost just one other game, and advanced to the quarterfinals of FCS championships. Delaware - which has a solid history, has not been very good, even by FCS standards, for most of the last several years))
Other than that:
PSU played Idaho a while back - and, IIRC, Idaho was FBS at the time the game was scheduled, dropped to FCS by the time the game was played
Before that, PSU played Indiana State 10-15 years ago (maybe the last "worse than Delaware" team they have played). They were actually a very BAD team, even by FCS standards. Of course, Larry Bird was out of eligibility at that time, or things might have been more competitive.

I already fear the coming of the Winged Helmets of the mighty Blue Hens. Hopefully they’ll be looking past us in anticipation of their next game against St. Francis.
Damn, I forgot they wear the striped helmets. Seeing those may give me an involuntary nausea response, like when you get a whiff of something that has made you puke in the past.

Their minor league team was called the Newark Lattes back in the day.

Stony Brook is an excellent school with a highly regarded faculty. Jim Simon who founded Renaissance Technologies was at one time chairman of their math department.
