Did the umpire need to apologize?

The article cites a “fierce argument” between the umpire and the pitcher, but I see the umpire composed. What is the issue? Was the umpire deemed too quick to eject the pitcher? Was the umpire held responsible for poor timing of the inspection given that pitcher had an issue with another umpire during the inning?

As the article states, it is rare for an umpire to apologize to a player. I don’t see why the umpire apologized here.

MadBum got hot really quick, but he’s an intense dude. Blue absolutely instigated this and needed to apologize.

I'm amazed that he did considering that umpires never think they're wrong (I am one so I know the feeling haha). In this case, Bellino baited Bumgarner and got the reaction he wanted and now the notoriety for ejecting him. It was a BS move by Bellino and it's something that if the Union wasn't so damn solid, MLB could actually do something about it.

And the worst part was his hubris caused the D-backs to have to use I think 6 pitchers for 8 innings of relief. This wasn’t a quick 1 game consequence this is gonna hurt them for like 3 games.

Sad that if Jomboy hadn’t done a breakdown on this I doubt it even gets any mention.

The umpires aren’t supposed to be the focus of the game. This guy missed that day of umpiring school. He clearly had a beef with Madbaum before this incident and instigated the incident. The “inspection” took way longer and way more exaggerated than normal.

Yes. The right thing to do. It tells me that the guy is human and it will carry weight with MLB players and managers. There is nothing wrong with having a conscience....it used to be pretty common...back in the day:cool:

He only apologized because he got reprimanded for his actions. The ump is probably lucky that Bumgarner was looking at his hand instead of watching the umpire never looking at his hand. The ump probably would have got decked based on the fact that Bumgarner had to be restrained.
