Did we not have a football team in 1906?

The Board of Trustees banned participation in football for the 1906 season after the faculty complained that the coarseness of chants and cheers, yelled by the students at football games, were not gentlemanly in nature. Within months The Board of Trustees reversed their decision after hearing pleas, and receiving petitions, from students and alumni alike. Play was allowed to resume in 1907.

long story short, there were too many deaths occurring on the field, so our bot canned the season, along with other schools. this is when they changed the rules of the game. more refs, no scrums, hash marks, 10 yards for a first down etc. the students petitions and demonstrations changed the presidents mind and football was reinstated the following year.

In those days football was about beating the crap out if each other. By the end of your freshman year- all your front teeth had been knocked out. Once we got over that hurdle- football resumed.

Does anyone know? I can't find anything on sportsreference.com, wikipedia, or gamecockarchives. Thanks
Don’t listen to these numnuts. All they know is what they be fed to read……….we most certainly had a ‘06 team………they just happened to do what the average student did then, drink and chase women.
