Went to State, coached at Ole Miss:

The University of Oregon athletic department announced on January 19, 2022, the hiring of Jarwarski Beckum as the new director of speed and performance for the Oregon football program.

Beckum comes to Oregon from Ole Miss, where he spent the last two seasons as the assistant director of football strength and conditioning while working with new Oregon head strength and conditioning coach Wilson Love

I'm assuming more strength programs at power 5 schools have a person that concentrates on more cardio/speed type stuff than weightlifting

Don’t really have an opinion about him. But the fact we have a director of speed & performance is a good thing. And the fact we haven’t had one explains a lot.
The title may be new, but its naive to think that MSU hasn’t had a speed and performance program for some time.

It's more a matter that we're going to be putting a lot more importance on developing (and hopefully recruiting) speed. For years, the one common denominator in our football team has been that we've been slow. Whatever we've been doing in this area in the past clearly hasn't been enough.

Strength coaches are getting more and more specialized. Baseball's strength coaches put their stuff on instagram if you want to see what they do on a week to week basis. No one does just bench, squat, and deadlift anymore.

I want a Director of Route Running for our WRs, a Director of Pass Rushing for our DL and a Director of OL Blocking. I thought that was what the coaches did but . . .

I don't know about y'all but basically stealing an Oregon staff member to create the same position at State sounds like a good thing.

Here's what Dan Lanning said about hiring Beckum last year: "He is a tremendous addition to our strength and conditioning staff. His experience working with Coach Love for the past two years will really allow him to hit the ground running here in Eugene. Coach Jaws has done it all in the weight room but truly specializes in speed training and development. I am fired up to welcome Jarwarski, his wife, Davida, and their two children, DJ and London, to the Duck family."

I don't know much about the previous staff (Tyson Brown et al), but the results on the field were subpar and it seems like Lebby went out got two guys who are certainly qualified to improve the S&C at State. AND, if we're going to be a tempo team, we're going to need to be as fit as any program in the SEC.

I defended Will his first couple of years because I thought after a couple years in a college training program his arm strength and overall physical abilities would greatly improve but that didn't seem to happen to the degree I thought it would. Was I fooling myself that this was probable/possible ? Would this type program have helped ?

He's also a Starkville native, went to Starkville High.

I have an observation about this sort of thing, that I've noticed over time. For about 25 years now, we have basically created an economy for sports, by sending all these kids to college on scholarship, but they didn't get useful degrees (and that's a big complaint many ex-athletes have, the ADs and coaches steered them toward the useless degrees so they could devote more time to the sport). They got kinesiology degrees, exercise science, etc. So they all graduate and their sports career ends, and what do they do? Offer lessons, open gyms, batting cages, sanction tournaments, coach travel teams, etc., and then it is discovered that you can play off of parents' FOMO to sell this new economy by your name cache. And what do you know, colleges also have money flowing in everywhere so they cash in too on all these new 'positions'.

Is it all truly needed? I have no idea. Are we moving our species forward with this new sports economy? I have no idea. One thing I've noticed more and more of, is a degree called 'Recreation and Tourism Administration' and all variants thereof. That was interesting to me, and could possibly be needed.

Seriously.

Speed, quickness and agility can be improved with consistent effective training and work on running form and explosive movement. All football players on our team should be spending 30-60 minutes every day working on improving their speed.

You might improve footwork, or a few minor things. Some things can often be improved. You can't really coach much speed.

If OM had hired a speed and performance coach you would all be b*tch*ng about why we are too cheap to even try to compete. Do some research on speed coaches. You will see they are used quite often and yes you can improve speed thru various different techniques. Obviously none of it will work on most of us but you can shave a few hundredths off a 40 with some specific training. A 4.46 looks a lot better than a 4.52 at the combine. Bolt was born fast but he would not be the fastest man alive without specific training.

Agree.

And in football, if a player can get just one step quicker/faster, then that improvement would result in much better play.
