BWI with TFrank, Nate and Sean re the DT size kind of encapsulated the issues. Coach (post UMich) said we need to get bigger - most assume he was talking DL spots. In his spring PC he says we are not chasing size for size sake at any position - assume talking DT. Beamon size not easy to explain per all of them, but Sean says we essentially have all 3-Tech DTs, except one body - Caleb Artis. Sean says he is not ready to go - I guess we will find that out soon. It looks like the staff have indicated there are no OL who could move to DT, so as the BWI crew said we will not be bigger at DT this season.

Real question is does it matter? Would the UMich fiasco have happened if we played them at the end of the season? Would McCarthy have been able to convert 3rd downs with his running if we played them at the end of the season? If we are not going to be typical DT size, can we still just stuff the LOS and have the DT take on double team and just fire hydrant them? If we can do that being smaller, then this is really just a nit. Illinois in week 3 will be testing this hypothesis, so we will know soon. If we have problem with this in the first two weeks, then that is probably not a good sign.

is this a concern?

Size had nothing to do with UM. I have said many times we were not lined up correctly on D to give our guys a chance. Manny had us out not lined up sound a couple of times. Did the kids line up wrong? Idk. But it looked like Manny was making strong calls when he should have been making tight calls

So Yes it matters. If we had Georgia's front 4 with our guys for the back 7 you think that last UM game happens like that? LOL
If we have larger DTs or even a true 1Tech DT/NT we would be better as they would almost demand a double team each play vs. Hat on Hat...its all numbers. And thats what UM did to us besides us being lined up often wrong they split the field and outnumbered us on each play they ran.

As mentioned Lining up is also incredibly crucial--just being lined up a little will allow blockers to gain easier leverage.

But imagine having large space eaters that demand a double team it makes up for occasionally being misaligned :ROFLMAO:

It would have helped if the Offense would have scored more points as well vs UM last year way to many 3 and outs in Ann Arbor.
