I read that the A's are considering matching the 600K offer of Dixon. Rosebowl said that Croom and Dixon have been in contact about the situation and Croom told Dixon that Coach Cohen will be calling.

Does anyone think that Cohen can keep Dixon from going pro?

You read that where?

I find it hard to believe that the "Money Ball" A's are going to spend 600K on a tenth rounder...

I think he either signs for less $$ or is in S-Vegas this fall.

Size of contract in baseball often doesn't have much to do with where a player was drafted, especially when the player went lower than he otherwise would have because of the chance he might go to college. Dixon was quoted in Saturday's Clarion Ledger as saying the A's scout told him they would be in the ballpark of $600,000. I think he'll probably sign for a little less, but not all that much less.

Guys are often drafted much later than they otherwise would have been when a club finally decides it's worth it to spend a pick for the rights to negotiate.

the A's fork out 600K for a tenth rounder. It is much different when the Yankees and Red Sox pay that much for 9th rounders because they are notorious for spending.. My bet is they will offer him about half that amount.

The A's knew what his cutoff was before they drafted him. And teams don't usually waste a 10th round pick on a player they don't think they can sign. That doesn't necessarily mean they can sign him. But they must think they have a pretty good chance to.

that he expects Dixon to announce that he will sign on Tuesday. I just don't see the A's spending 600K on a 10th round pick. They are tight wads. I can see the 350-475 range on Dixon. After he said that the 3rd round was his cutoff point, he changed his mind. I guess the 600K cutoff point will be adjusted by Dixon as well.

It's easy to say your cutoff is 3rd round and $600,000 before you're drafted in the 10th round and offered $400,000.

my dad wouldn't have let me spend a dime of it. I would have had to live like other 18 year old kids while it sat in some investment fund for me to use later in life. He wouldn't have cared less if it was my money or not. Therefore the 600,000 would have had time to turn into alot more money. I just hope that Dixon has someone to keep him in line financially or an 18 year old could blow through 600,000 quick.

you're 18. It's your money. He has no say. Now mine would have advised me what to do, but he couldn't have told me what to do with it.

I'm going into physical therapy. I'll be in school for 7 years.

Once I'm out of school, It'll take me at least 7 years to pay back my student loans and also earn 600k working at my new job.

The guy has a chance to make more money by signing his name on a piece of paper than I do in the next 14 years. I wouldn't blame him either way.
