Option 1 - Try to bring E. Robinson back?
Option 2 - Promote D. Barnes who waited patiently?
Option 3 - someone else?

Well that's not ideal this late in the offseason hiring cycle.
I don’t think it’s a big surprise to Franklin. Barnes stayed on in an analysts roll after last season when his time as a GA ran out. Plus John’s son graduates from State High this June.

If JF thinks Barnes is ready I would like to see Barnes. Good recruiter and would probably keep many of the current DL players happy.

How do we know he is a good recruiter?

If Franklin, Terry Smith and the rest of the coaching staff say he has fixed recruiting in the Philadelphia area then I listen. Do you have inside knowledge you want to share about his recruiting and coaching skills that he is not good? If so what coaches and players are saying he is not good? Please share because here is coaches and players on record saying just how good he is....
“His impact has been monumental,” former Nittany Lions defensive tackle PJ Mustipher said before the Rose Bowl. “The work he's done, he puts in a lot of work with us because the coaches can't work after hours, but he's been able to put in a lot of work with us, our pass rushing. Guys across the board, even myself, I never considered myself the best pass rusher, but I'm starting to really trust my skills and stuff, and that's all from Coach Deion. They play well off one another. I'm hoping Coach Deion is able to find himself his own D-line room here in the near future, and he deserves that because he's put in the work. Just blessed to be able to play for two guys who have that passion about the defensive line like we do.”

In addition to Barnes’ impact on the players already in the roster, he’s used his connections to Philadelphia to improve the relationships between Penn State and the area. Cornerbacks coach and defensive recruiting coordinator Terry Smith laid out what Barnes has meant to the staff on National Signing Day.
“Deion's an anchor for us. He does such a great job in Philly, and it fixed our issues there,” Smith said. “Hopefully, Deion gets a great job somewhere. He's a great D-line coach. He's a great mind. He's a great recruiter. I hope he can go find a job that he's looking for, but I don't want to lose him here at Penn State. Hopefully, some things can work out here at Penn State long term. But he's been tremendous for us in Philadelphia.”

Well seeing how he was a GA and GA can’t go off campus to recruit (I am not sure they are allowed to call players), how do you know he’ll be a good recruiter at this level. Lots of good guys out there

those comments sound like someone is trying to help someone get a job. At PSU? Who knows

Good riddance. PSU needs someone who can recruit and train fire hydrants on the inside and hyenas on the outside.

Why did Franklin hire this guy to begin with? He frequently makes some really poor hiring decisions.

I'm not so sure about that. We need a guy that can recruit DL better than any guy we've had since LJ and then be able to coach them up. I don't think there's lots of those guys out there.

That wasn’t my point. We were discussing someone w no recruiting experience taking the job. You need more than being a ‘good guy’ to do the job. There’s lots of good guys out there , it takes more.
as mentioned hire David Turner

He's recruited most of the Philly kids we've landed since he's been back at PSU.

He has no restrictions on who he talks to just can't take visits so?
There are restrictions on how often they talk. GA can’t recruit. So you want to hire someone with no on the road recruiting experience? Ok fine by me

The bigger question to me is what issues did PSU have in Philly? And why? Shouldn’t Penn State have a stranglehold on most of PA by now?

I hope they hit the hire out of the park but I don't want them to hire a coach just because he coached before. Elijah Robinson and every other coach had no experience at one time as well.

By all accounts he is a rising star by coaching and recruiting. Does that mean JF will hire him? No. JF has taken a hard look at who he hires the last few years and upped his game and standard for who he hires. Will be interesting to see who he hires. Is it Barnes or someone from his notebook he keeps. I don't think it will be Elijah Robinson since he is already assistant head coach. IMHO his next step will be HC somewhere.

Does anyone here have input? LOL
Should the BWICAC meet and send James a list of "acceptable" candidates before he makes the inevitable mistake?

Great for John. The Lions are stock up at this point, especially if Rodgers isn't with the Packers next season.
