Do you consider this board as "Social Media"?

The reason I ask is that someone asked me the other day if I participated in "social media". Since I don't have any accounts on Facebook, Linked-In, YouTube, Twitter etc.. I answered "no". Was I incorrect?

Is there also a difference between Social Media, Social Networks and/or online communities?

Well, it is social and it is media. But I, too, don’t know if it’s technically “social media” as that term is commonly used.

Of course you were incorrect.

It's a message board. The predecessor to things like Twitter ... but still clearly social media.

There are also articles out there that suggest a message board doesn't fit the current definition of Social Media; hence why I asked.

Based on which imaginary criteria?

You have an account, with some identity (real or imagined), as does anyone else who chooses to sign up and use the service, and you communicate information, thoughts, etc. to and with others in a manner that is visible to those using the service.

It's social. It's media. It's social media.

Indeed, there are arguments both ways. It's a matter of definition. I think, technically, this board is social media, but, like you, I don't personally consider it so, and when asked if I am on social media my response is always "no."

You really should visit all the social media sites and read the reviews about all that fercockata inferior garbage you’re peddling to unsuspecting people. After all the repeated Lawsuits and bankruptcies to avoid paying creditors and victims I can’t believe you’re not locked up. Have a rainbow 🌈 day.

What's the argument that message boards, like this one, aren't social media?

Honestly asking, as I haven't seen anyone put forward an actual distinction. Just folks who assert that twitter, facebook, etc. are all alike, and message boards are different. But no one has ever explained how, in terms of how it would affect a "social media" label.

As I noted, I believe a message board is technically social media but it really comes down to how you define the term. There is a difference is structure between this board, for example, and Facebook. You cannot "restrict" people here as you can on Facebook. There are different monetization factors that exist between the two. There are other factors in play but are they enough to draw a distinction or is it a distinction without a difference? Rephrasing Justice Rehnquist, I may not be able to define "social media" but I know it when I see it. On Facebook, or Instagram, I see it. Here. I don't. On the other hand I say a tomato is a vegetable but a botanist would call it a fruit. I can live with that.

I would define Social Media as something that has its own application (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)

Message boards are websites viewed on browsers. They existed well before Facebook et. al and were not called Social Media back then.

Unsuspecting people? Not so my friend. Fairgambit Worldwide Enterprises is the most honest merchant you will find anywhere. We make it absolutely clear that we sell inferior products at grossly inflated prices. Our slogan "No one charges you more for less" says it all. :)

FIFY.

The generally accepted English transliteration is "verkakte," but I certainly applaud and appreciate the effort.

Maybe the question is since not everyone is interested in State football, this may be too niche to be labeled social media. I’ll ask over at emiraforum, see what my lotus bros say

So Facebook, Twitter, etc. were not social media until they created their own apps, several years after they started as websites that are viewed on browsers?

No. If you want to say, for instance, that Facebook isn’t social media, but twitter is, you can do that without fear of being jailed. Only consequence is judgment. Best of luck to you with whatever social media classifications your friend chooses.

Media (news channels, shows, publications, etc) can have a niche target market. Social media would be no exception.

So, which social media is best? We believe there are seven types of social media categories that are worth considering as an online business owner:

  1. Social networking sites
  2. Image sharing sites
  3. Video sharing sites
  4. Microblogs
  5. Discussion forums
  6. Blogs
  7. Review sites

Moogy, I respect your take on this, but that article was written by Allanah Faherty. She's a very nice lady I'm sure, but she has 427 followers on Instagram. Now, admittedly that is more than I have here, but she is not likely to move the needle for me.

Wait, let's ask Diane Lane! Diane, should this board be considered social media?
Hmmm. Diane is not sure. I'd best visit her and discuss the matter further. Be back in a week. Sooner if my wife reports me missing.

What is Social Media? Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.

So yes, it is.

What does her number of IG followers have to do with anything? I didn't even know who authored it. It's irrelevant. It's a very good synopsis of the different types of social media categories, since that's part of the topic at hand.

The term "social media" was coined, and used before facebook was popularized, and not in reference to the specific type of networking platform it utilized. There's no relevant distinction between a message board like this one, and twitter, when it comes to whether or not it's social, media, or social media. You could go on to facebook right now and create a "McAndrew Board" group, invite everyone from here to there, and we could have the exact same conversations we have here. Both via social media.

Introduce an idea or even posit a question...then immediately get lambasted and start a big argument between various users over anything at all.

So, yeah, it fits "social media" just fine.

We just disagree on this. It's all a matter of definitions. I really don't care if this board is, or is not, social media. I say it is not and Allanah has not changed my mind. The issue is not as cut and dry as some suggest. As I recall, there was a court case a few years ago which hedged on the issue and basically said "it depends". I tried to find it but cannot and I have spent more time in this thread than I ever expected. I will spend no more. Peace.

If we have been on here since the 90’s is it still considered a social media site since I don’t think ther were any at the time. Are we grandfathered in to say, no, I never participate in social media.

"Here, the term “social media,” although not mathematically precise, has a reasonably certain definition: Web sites where users are able to share and generate content, and find and connect with other users of common interests."

Any ambiguities with the term deal with much more tenuous (to say the least) examples, like banking accounts. Message boards like this one clearly fit the commonly accepted definition.

Good conversation with many different and compelling arguments on both sides.

The person(s) who asked me last week about social media participation were insurance underwriters when I was calling around for personal liability umbrella policy quotes.

Aside from getting asked about houses, vehicles and toys (planes, boats, motorcycles etc) apparently social media participation is considered an emerging underwriting risk.
