The term "social media" was coined, and used before facebook was popularized, and not in reference to the specific type of networking platform it utilized. There's no relevant distinction between a message board like this one, and twitter, when it comes to whether or not it's social, media, or social media. You could go on to facebook right now and create a "McAndrew Board" group, invite everyone from here to there, and we could have the exact same conversations. Both via social media.
Coining a buzzy new term doesn't earn you any money, only bragging rights. But when the term is as buzzy and widely-circulated as "social media," the bragging rights involved are considerable -- and so is the jostling to claim them.
