Let me preface this by saying I actually like Ohtani, so this post isn’t about him. But imagine being an organization like the Dodgers and needing to clear that much cap space to “ sign better players.” You are the premier team in Los Angeles. You already have players like Freddie Freeman, Millie Betts, Walker Buehler, Will Smith, and others and you still need more money to try and buy a championship.

This is why I will always be a million times more impressed when teams like the Braves, Rays, D-Backs, etc. do what they do over teams like LA, New York, and Boston. Even if they fall short like almost every other team does every year. The fact that those smaller market teams can be as strong as they are over the course of a season is amazing. It’s why I can’t fathom how anyone gets enjoyment out of watching a team like the Dodgers win the World Series. In any given season with that payroll a teenage middle school girl should be able to put a lineup together that can reach the playoffs.

All I gotta say is, as a Yankees fan, I sure am glad we didn't sign him. That's just way too much money to have tied up in one player. For $70 million/year over 10 years, anything short of 3 World Series titles will be failure. There was no way I wanted to give that money to a player coming off his second TJ surgery. We've just been burned way too many times in the past with the bloated contract.

So, asking you as a Yankees fan while simultaneously a Carolina fan, there’s no way the Yankees winning a World Series, with all their almost unlimited resources, would be anywhere near as satisfying as seeing a smaller school like USC (relatively speaking regarding our limitations) win a national championship in football right?

Why aren't you impressed with the Texas Rangers winning it all? Their payroll was less than the Braves.
