Does Bama deserve preseason hype?

ESPN (Mark May and others) was giving Bama a real shot to contend for the SEC West. While they will probably be better, they gave up 22Pts. per game last year and they play at Ark., Georgia, Tenn., and LSU. Saban is good, but I think it will take another year or two before his recruiting really starts paying off. Thoughts?

I don't think Auburn will be all that great, nothing that Bama can't handle. If LSU falters, we will have a shot at it, assuming minimal offensive improvement. So saying Bama will contend is not really that far-fetched. Parker Wilson can't get any worse, and this new recruiting class will probably produce at least one or two guys that can make a difference.

They really need to find someone to replace DJ Hall's numbers.

I watched a few minutes of the Florida spring game and Craig James called in (he's doing a tour of different schools) and he said Ohio State was clearly the best team in the country, their the most talented, nobody will compete with them, etc. At one point do you think they would just shut their mouth about Ohio State?

One side note....Fowler said the SEC was the best conference "not by a little but by a country mile".

it is yours no doubt. As for bama, they will be clearly third in the west but stranger things have happened. OSU will be very good this year. People like to bash them for last year, but they were young and building (and many were saying last year that 08 was going to be OSU's year not 07) and lucked into the nat'l title game because they play in the big ten. They also had several players like Lauranitis return. They should be pretty high odds to return. Even if they lose to SC, they have the whole year to get back in it and the SEC will devour itself once again.

You don't think we have a shot at the West next year? Really? Croom has shown the ability to beat Bama anywhere, we have Aub at home. Arkansas and Ole Miss are down. Assuming LSU drops 2, why couldn't we make a run?

Nobody says it is "ours", but we do have a shot. I know you hate it and refuse to give us any credit at all. Gets really 17-ing old everytime I say something good about MSU having some idiot Ole Miss *** 'put me in my place'.

Even his first SEC title was won with a team that went 5-3 in conference play. Bama won't legitimately compete for an SEC title until his recruits gain more experience and start really taking over, at which point everyone will cream themselves talking about how great Nick Saban is.

Herbstreit predicted them to win 9 games. Saban is great, but he's human and some just haven't realized that yet.

And you don't have to play Georgia or Florida.

Alabama has to play Georgia.
LSU has to play both Georgia and Florida.
Auburn has to play Georgia.
Arkansas has to play Florida

Florida and Georgia are going to be the class of the SEC this fall.

Getting to miss them this year is a HUGE advantage for MSU in scheduling, especially when the team that most people see as the favorite (LSU) plays both of them.

This is definitely a year where MSU is going to have a shot to make some hay. This is probably going to be Croom's best shot at doing something big with MSU for a little while.

and believe it or not, after catching some of UM's spring game, they may make some noise. Yes, Goat Holder said that. Snead and McCluster looked pretty good.

to avoid shooting on campus and hiding the guns. We are losing key players due to stupidity heading into a season with a much more favorable schedule than last year. Seriously I'm still surprised we won 8 games with that schedule we had last year.

The young players have to grow up sometime. And if Croom has accomplished anything, it is establishing quality depth. We will still win the games we're supposed to, and hopefully knock off Aub or Bama. 7 or 8 wins a bowl.

you feel better. Your biggest problem will be having to play LSU and hand over the tie breaker in September. I think it is MUCH more likely that you finish last in the West.

You are being a homer to not admit MSU could make a run at the West Title, all things considered. At the very least we have a bigger chance this year than in many years past.

and they open with Clemson.

They'll win 7, MAYBE 8, plus bowl.

It's ours to lose this year. We'll have a pretty good team, a great schedule, and we will be surrounded my mediocrity in the West. I can't wait.

in order to take one line of my post and make a sarcastic comment about it. Nice job. Care to make an argument in response to the body of my post?

I agree. State has a legit shot at the West title this year. In no way do I think you'll be the best team in the West, but your schedule is favorable enough that you won't have to be the best team to win the division this year. And like you said UK and Vandy should not be as tough as they were last year, so that's a good break for you as well.
