Of course not. He's at a historically worse program than Kentucky, with even less tradition, even less history, even less fan support, even less school support, even less talent in his area of the country, etc. Yet he pulled it together magnificently to make the school's first CWS appearance in 50+ years in 2005, and then win back-to-back CWS titles.
Should Oregon State make it to the NCAA Tournament this year (they're a bubble team right now), I'm picking them to win their regional. For what it's worth, they have a better conference record this year than they did last year.

Casey can obviously coach. You don't make it to the CWS 3 years in a row if you can't coach. And you would think being able to recruit top talent has gotten a lot easier for him now since he can pitch the national championships. Yeah, his first 11 years were nothing special, but it's logical to assume that success is going to beget success in his case.

For the record, he's my top choice, but I'm also really high on O'Connor. I think Cohen should be the top choice only if staying inside the family is important (and it's not for me) and you can't accept Showalter's age or lack of college experience (I'd be more worried about his age than his never coaching in college). Thus, he's #5 or so on my list based on the fact that he's only had one great season and one regional appearance, and he didn't make it out of that regional. Three post season appearances, all of which led to the CWS and two to championships, in fourteen years is much more impressive to me than one regional loss in four years.

You've beaten the 3 appearances in 14 years thing into the ground like you do every stance you take. We get it, you prefer Cohen over Casey. There's no need to tell us 500 times. While I do find it hilarious that you are contradicting yourself on this subject, even that wears off after the 3rd new thread created.

I will tell you my biggest concern about Casey. If he came to MSU, he has nothing to prove. What would be his motivation for doing well? He already has two NC's. If he flops at MSU, he will always be able to go back to Oregon.

We need someone that is going to be hungry and motivated to do well. Now, Casey may very well do this, but I think that's the biggest risk as far as he is concerned. And the fact that he has very few recruiting contacts here is also a legit concern, but at the same time, I'm not sure that Cohen and Corbin have a whole lot of those as well.

You can throw Augie Garrido at me all day, but it's still a legit concern.

As much as I'd like to see someone like Casey come to State, motivation is a definite concern.

I know State needs to go out and get the best guy possible, but I'd rather our coach have these three qualities:

1. Familiarity with the program (not in a Raffo sense, but in an appreciation sense)
2. Quality experience with a history of success
3. Something to prove

I feel like someone who hasn't won it all before might actually be more inclined to come here for the long haul and make a dynasty for themselves. Pat Casey has already done that. Granted it was only two seasons worth of success, but hell, he won it all both years. That's pretty damn impressive. But what business does he have here in Starkville? Has he ever been to the South? Has he ever watched a game at DNF? These may seem like worthless concerns, but when it comes to motivation, I think they'll be considerable factors. Someone who knows what they're getting themselves into will work better with the fanbase and staff. With that in mind, I think Cohen best fits this profile.

And I know he's not a popular choice, but what Buck Showalter brings to the table is hard to ignore. No, he's never coached the college game. But he knows the game of baseball as well as any of these guys. If recruiting is a concern you've got the wrong idea. Players will play for Buck Showalter. He managed the <17'in> Yankees. I also read posts that claim Buck won't know what to do with the scholarships, and won't know how to handle young players and all the stipulations that make the college game different from the bigs. These concerns are being blown way out of proportion. The guy is as sharp as they come, and assuming that he couldn't figure things out and hire the proper staff to aid the process is foolish.

Buck Showalter will also bring more national media hype to our program than ANY candidate, including the great Pat Casey. Buck is on ESPN all the time, and I guarantee you more players nationwide would recognize him sooner than any other guy we're thinking of hiring. That becomes a domino effect in coverage and recruiting. College baseball is growing in interest, and pretty soon the ESPN networks and CSTV are going to be broadcasting games all season, with more promotional efforts. We need to be as much a part of this as possible, impressing the entire nation with our atmosphere and support.

In short, I think Buck would be great. He's a State guy. He's a proven coach. And he also appeared on Seinfeld. I think there's much more upside to what Buck could bring than Casey. BUT, Cohen, in my opinion, is still the best fit. Barely.

And keep this in mind: Coaches who achieve the level of success that Pat Casey has at Oregon State rarely (if ever) match that success when they go to another program. That, more than anything, is why I think hiring Pat Casey will end up being a HUGE let down for this program.

....next time, can you start one thread that 1) calls me out (because that's really what the board needs) 2) points out that Casey has only made the postseason 3 times in 14 years (seriously, it only sunk in after you posted it for the 15th time.) 3) calls out the hypocrites on this board who like a coach that is currently on the payroll that has an overall SEC championship, an SEC tournament championship and several division championships in the last ten years (God, he sucks) 4) points out that we didn't have any offense in the spring game.

That would just about take care of it. Thanks.

Basically one of those is in every post. It really adds to the board, and makes it more enjoyable for everybody. By the way, Sanford, stand by for your gay nickname.
