He beat a dangerous Fernando Gonzalez (who got the silver medal at the Olympics) 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. In 13 service games, Roddick won 53 points and only lost 9. He saved the only break point he faced in the match. He's probably got the best serve ever in tennis and right now, he's serving the best he has in his career.

He's got a shot to pull off an upset, but there's no way he can win it. He might have to possibly face the top 3 players in the world in succession if he were to get to the finals.

He is serving well, but to me he hasn't improved enough over the years to keep up with the rate that Federer and Nadal have improved. Plus he has younger guys coming into the game with better overall talent such as Djokovic, Murray, Del Potro, Cillic, ect.

gonzales is a very tough draw. i didn't see the match, but based on the score alone, i would say roddick is playing very well. he must be doing more than just serving, because the score wasn't 6,5, and 6 (or similar).

but there's no way he can win it. - whatever
that's just wrong. if you never lose your serve, you will NEVER lose in tennis. EVER. and if you serve like roddick, you don't have to do a lot more to win. if he can play solid enough in the rest of the game, he could win. it wouldn't be his first us open title. his road certainly is tough, though.

that said, roddick is an absolute ***, and i hope he loses.

I agree completely that he's been the ultimate one-trick pony in tennis. He probably won't win the tournament, but he defnintely looked better than either Federer or Djokovic yesterday. I think he loses in the finals to Nadal this year.

Andy Murray takes the Open, mark it down. I also think the Nadal-Fish match will be really close, and I'm going to go with Fish in an upset. Nadal's just not the same on a fast court, and these courts are faster than Wimbledon. The hard courts wear on his body, his knees, and his ground strokes sit up more and don't seem topenetrate through the court or have the same 'jump' to them.
And I know Roddick has beaten all of those players, but all 3 in a row? On this type of stage? It would be great for American tennis, but very unlikely.

The Federer win was a couple of weeks later. You could be right about Murray. He's been playing great this summer. But don't count Nadal out just because it's a hard court. He's beefed up his serve and his backhand and has become one of the best net players in the game. He's not the same player he was even a year ago. He's won 1 Masters event on hard court this summer and made the semifinals of the other one and also won the Olympics on a hard court. I'd love to see Fish pull off the upset tonight though.
