Gosh, I went from rooting for them in the B12 to absolutely despise them in the sec.

If I remember correctly the officials for the game wore BYU uniforms and even scored for them.
That last phantom PI call was as bad as you’ll ever see. We didn’t have a player within 5 yards of their guy.

And, yes, I went off on the crew as I saw them being escorted into the Seal Center. But, I was in the upper deck.

I was at that game. One of our guys called pass made a sign for a first down or his arm out and was called for a personal foul after he made the gesture. The entire night was a screw job, but I after that knew we were utterly screwed. I still never seen a game officiated in that manner again

Same, and my memory’s fuzzy on a few things, but I’ll never forget the sideline pass that grindle caught after being mugged all day. He catches the ball, gets knocked out of bounds, and he sits up and flips the ball over his head. Ref throws a flag and hits him with an unsportsmanlike conduct call for not handing him the ball after the catch.

Never in my life have I hated an officiating crew as much as that one

And the worst part is that BYU got destroyed by Hawaii the next week, so the screw job was even more unnecessary.

It’s disgusting that a game could be called like that in the TV era, where it’s saved as evidence. They didn’t even try to hide it.

So many weird circumstances about that night. That was the game rescheduled because of 9/11 so it was the week after the Egg Bowl in early December. I remember being at the Laurel Christmas Parade that morning and then riding up to game with family afterward. Florida /Tennessee and LSU/Auburn were the same day and essentially play in games for Atlanta.

Doesn’t feel right to say “if 9/11 never happened” but that game being in December instead of September changed a lot of things. In September BYU was just an average team, in December they were BCS contenders and the Mountain West refs had a clear directive and agenda.

There was no way they would lose to Mississippi State with a perfect record on the line, especially on a television game.

What the referees did that night was criminal. I never did hear if we even complained about it. Would have never scheduled anyone from that conference ever again unless that whole crew was fired.

But it’s how we all felt after watching the 2nd half of this game.

We've all certainly seen poor officiating, but this is the one game that I'd bet my life on that it was more than just "poor" officiating. Those refs were 100% going to make sure that BYU won that game. Either one or more of them had some pressure from their conference or were influenced by actions in Las Vegas. Something definitely happened. 1000% screw job

I have never taken more pleasure from a team losing than I did the following week when BYU got destroyed by Hawaii something like 72-45. It was a glorious beatdown and I enjoyed every second of it.
