....or we can cross Sanders off the list. Here are his talking points from the Yancy article.

  • State coaches are trying too hard because we lost Pat.
  • His parents are paying for him to go to the Cotton Bowl as a birthday present.
  • OM has a proven qb in Snead and apparently Stanley is proven too because Sanders has seen him practice, but we don't have a proven qb. Russell was good in high school but might not be in college.

- Loves what Mullen has done with the offense
- Knows the Qb situation is about to get better
- will get a lot better throwing downfield next year
- Mullen has brought tons of energy to the program

No idea where he goes but those quotes are pretty much polar opposites.

Edit: just read yancy's article and yeah, its not good.

I read some of the things these guys say and what gets their interest or how they view things, and I truly feel sorry for the coaches recruiting them.

So I guess Yancy is saying that Cotton Bowl trip is the last nail in the bucket?

But quotes are a little misleading, because he still had good things to say about MSU. Saying the OM, MSU, and Fla St were his top 3 and he didn't name a leader. The gist about us recruiting him too hard was that he wasn't going to move a school off his list because they didn't call him every day. That's when he said 'State coaches call and visit a lot and he thinks that they don't want to miss out on another good WR like they missed on Pat, so they are trying too hard. ...He also said landing Cam Newton would be a big boost to MSU for him. I also don't get how Stanley is more proven than Russell, if everything he knew about Stanley was from watching practice. Maybe he hasn't been to an MSU practice? Or maybe he did and Tyler was throwing poorly? It definitely looks like he's a very high on Ole Miss right now, and State is definitely a few notches down.

Edit to say: It's still a long way from being over, and a lot of these guys just tell the recruiting 'writers' what they want to hear.

Outside of Snead, Stanley, and Relf, none of the other QBs on either team have seen the field. It's hard to pass judgement on whose are better without actually seeing them play.

Are you making the argument that Relf/Russell are better than Stanley/Cotton? That's a guess at best.

do you just have to chime in whenever the name Ole Miss is mentioned? both teams QB's sucked this year.

Yancy did with Robert Johnson and that will tell you what you need to know about Yancy. Look, Steve slants things in MSU's favor and Yancy slants things in OM's favor. Just look at their top 20 MS players this year as proof.

But the biggest difference is that Yancy asks very leading questions to the recruits and at times will try and manipulate an interview. I have never seen Steve or Paul Jones do that.

Robert Johnson that was posted two days before he committed to State:

-Yancy considers Robert Johnson a close friend
-The Ole Miss coaches were welcomed to the OG visit in a red carpet manner than none of the coaches had ever seen before, even when at Arkansas
-Robert Johnson was giving eye-winks to the Rebel coaches during the visit when talking about his college choice
-Robert Johnson hugged everybody when it was over, told them they were family

from any of his interviews.

He is going to give conflicting interviews to both groups just to make a controversy or bring more attention to his recruitment. He loves the attention and will do as much as he can to manufacture as much as possible as related to his recruitment.

That's the main reason why he will be waiting until NSD or very close to it (like Patterson did) to announce his decision.

Hell, I can't blame him...if I was a top recruit like him, I would do the same thing.

I completely understood what he said. I just was curious what led him to his conclusion. I didn't make an argument against it. He could answer "blind homersim", and that would be a fine answer for me.

And yes, our QB play sucked this year, but we still threw for more TDs than we did INTs (22:17), and we still were 4th in the SEC in passing yardage. That's a long way from the Adams/Schaeffer/Lane/Spurlock/Flatt train we were on for 4 years.

- Snead has shown himself to be no more than a mediocre QB. That much WAS proven this year if that's what Sanders is looking for.
- Stanley is proven because Sanders saw him in practice?? Yea, whatever.
- Russell is not proven but Stanley is?? Do we need to allow Sanders to go view Russell practicing?? As AI would say "We're talking practice man".

That whole last bullet is a complete joke.

I think Ole Miss has the "best" qb. A high percentage of Snead's passes may go to the wrong team, but a recruit knows he will be throwing the ball a decent amount and some of those passes, by the law of averages, will make it to UM receivers. If Russell struggles next year, there's a real possibility that we could spend a significant portion of each game with Relf in essentially a running formation only throwing the ball when the D has sold out on the run. Long term, you'd think Mullen and Russell/future recruit is better than Nutt and Stanley/future recruit, but I'm not sure recruits are looking three years down the road.

Until we have a Qb that can throw 20 TDs in a season or throw for 2000 yards it's very difficult to use "good" and "MSU quarterback" in the same sentence. And before the tired old excuse of "we have traditionally been a running team" excuse is thrown out, ********. 175 yards passing and throwing gives you a middle of the road offense and a 2000 yard passer. For once, I'd love to see us put it together in all phases of the game. Hopefully next year it happens, with either CN or TR but until then we have nothing to brag about at QB. Even Snead's "******" year would rewrite the record books at MSU.

Hey, at least you had an answer.

For reference, our back up finished with a better passer rating than both Snead and Relf:

NAME CMP ATT YDS CMP% YDS/A TD INT RAT
Jevan Snead 178 328 2464 54.3 7.51 20 17 127.1
Nathan Stanley 9 16 160 56.3 10.00 1 0 160.9

Speaking of which, what qualifies you for the SEC stats leaders? I'm guessing games played, because Kodi Burns and his 13 pass attempts really doesn't qualify as a QB. Nor does Relf's 41 compare to the rest of that list.

And if they are going by games played only, then Dexter McCluster is technically the SEC's passing efficiency leader. Makes about as much sense to throw him on the list as it does Burns.

NAME CMP ATT YDS CMP% YDS/A TD INT RAT
Dexter McCluster 1 1 27 100.0 27.00 1 0 656.8

and he has thrown 28 Int's. He didn't have a receiver this year who could stretch the field like Mike Wallace did last year. If anybody saw Wallace last night against Green Bay it's easy to understand how much he meant to Snead last year. Maybe Sanders sees himself as the next Mike Wallace.

He still had Hodge. Give Snead a little time and he's a world beater. Put some pressure on him and he looks average. Of course, that can be said for most QBs out there.
