ESPN has released its FPI (Football Power Index) Rankings and, in turn, ranked the Southeastern Conference’s teams ahead of the 2023 season. That includes projected records for all 14 programs for the upcoming year. Still, while they’ll all have their fair share of excitement come August, ESPN is once again anticipating a two-horse race between Alabama and Georgia then a third challenger close behind.

  1. Alabama Crimson Tide – FPI: 28.2, Record: 11.1-1.6
  2. Georgia Bulldogs – FPI: 27.4, Record: 11.7-1.2
  3. LSU Tigers – FPI: 22.1, Record 9.6-2.6
  4. Tennessee Volunteers – FPI: 15.2, Record: 8.2-3.9
  5. Ole Miss Rebels – FPI: 13.4, Record: 7.6-4.4
  6. Florida Gators – FPI: 12.7, Record: 6.8-5.2
  7. Texas A&M Aggies – FPI: 12.7, Record: 7.5-4.5
  8. Kentucky Wildcats – FPI: 9.7, Record: 7.2-4.9
  9. Arkansas Razorbacks – FPI: 9.0, Record: 6.8-5.2
  10. Mississippi State Bulldogs – FPI: 7.8, Record: 6.3-5.7
  11. Auburn Tigers – FPI: 6.9, Record: 5.8-6.2
  12. Missouri Tigers – FPI: 6.4, Record: 6.0-6.0
  13. South Carolina Gamecocks – FPI: 5.6, Record: 5.5-6.5
  14. Vanderbilt Commodores -FPI: -2.8, Record: 4.0-8.0
Think they got SC a bit low. I look for them to be mid pack in the SEC.

6-6 will be the consensus pick among the national sites. I'm surprised they have Auburn behind us. And the computers/Vegas aren't buying the Shane Beamer hype-train.

I sort of see Auburn behind us for this year, but SC has a good QB returning and had a nice season last year. I think they have some momentum with Beamer, but surprisingly you're right.....Vegas doesn't seem to be buying into them yet.

Our rank is good for 32nd nationally, right between Michigan State and Minnesota. Also of note, Ohio State is No. 1 by a pretty good margin.

A&M is the wild card. I could see them finishing anywhere from 2nd in the West to last. I’m guessing a lot closer to last. This could be a real train wreck.
T5&7 is eventually going to put it together, there's just too much money down there. I'm just thankful they are currently hamstrung by Dumbo's crazy contract.

All of that may be true, but this is a computer ranking.

Keep in mind that FPI is not a ranking system and the preseason FPI includes all kinds of factors that weigh against us this season:

What is college FPI?

FPI is a predictive rating system designed to measure team strength and project performance going forward. The ultimate goal of FPI is not to rank teams 1 through 128; rather, it is to correctly predict games and season outcomes.

What goes into FPI?

Each team’s FPI rating is composed of a predicted offensive, defensive and special teams component. These ratings represent the number of points each unit is expected to contribute to the team's net scoring margin on a neutral field against an average FBS opponent.

In the preseason, these components are made up entirely of data from previous seasons, such as returning starters, past performance, recruiting rankings and coaching tenure (more on the preseason component below). That information allows FPI to make predictions (and make determinations on the strength of a team’s opponents) beginning in Week 1, and then it declines in weight as the season progresses.

Here's the article if you want to read more: https://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/122612/an-inside-look-at-college-fpi

For years they did have a couple of high level execs at the ESPN Bristol, CT office. And according to some, a few more in middle mgt......all journalism grads of Ole Miss. Could be how they gather favor from the company in programming history. Don't know if those persons are all still there or not. Seems like they get 4 or 5 times the story coverage we get. I remember they did a piece on Croom and a piece on the basketball team sneaking out of Starkville to play in the NCAA tourney against mostly black team. The Sharks have had numerous stories over the years (many more than us) run by ESPN.
