His legacy is that in addition to being massively successful on the football field he valued his players beyond the football field, insisted that they focus on the academic side of being student athletes, and were positive representatives of the university, even to the point of benching valuable players in important games (which would rarely happen in top programs today) to ensure sound discipline. It was distasteful to many that he didn't have to pretend to be a good guy, but truly was "holier than thou" in the way he ran his program and many despised him for it.
