Everyone consider this about Casey

I'm kind of worried about the overall record. Yeah he is at oregon st. and yeah he won back to back titles there. But, from time to time, you can catch lightening in a bottle and have great success for a short period of time if you get lucky at the right time. I am too lazy to do any research, but I bet he got alot of players from california (a place where there is an overabundance of talent). What probably happened for him is he got some good players and some of his "not so highly rated" players turned out to be much better than they were supposed to be. Find two really good starters and a top notch closer and you can win it all. On top of that, he is from the opposite corner of the country. I'm sure he is a very good coach, just not sure he is the right one for us. I'm just glad I'm not making the decision. I think.

I'm worried about the lightning in the bottle effect as well. That said, I would still be very surprised if he left. It is also possible that Garrido could be leaving Texas, so he could be thinking about that job as well.

This is what it's going to come down to for him:

Do I stay in my home state at a place where I can stay forever, with really no pressure to leave, and with my family.

OR

Do I go to MSU get paid a ton of money where there will be a ton of pressure to win. However, if I fail, I can always come back to Oregon and won't have to see any of those people again.

Another thing that might factor into his decision is that Oregon is starting a baseball program, and they're going to be pretty serious about it. He won't be able to cherry pick all the talent in Oregon, and as someone mentioned about the talent in California- he will possibly be competing with the Ducks for that talent as well.

I'm not exactly going out on a limb here when I say that their best days are probably over.

coming down here and realizing that he made a mistake and bolting in two or three years. Oregon and Mississippi have to be pretty close to being polar opposites.

The guy can recruit, and the guy can win national championships. We'd be crazy not to hire him if he wants the job.

because yes, they are both VERY different. For one thing, he would have to get used to filling his car up by himself and not having someone do it for him. Cedar vs pine, mountains vs delta, sweet tea vs raspberry tea, catfish vs salmon- polar opposites is a good way to describe it.

The Swan did a list of "likely" candidates for the job with anyalisis.

Casey's name wasn't on his list.

Worrying about Pat's mindset may be wasted energy.

Take it with a grain of salt.

I'm certianly not trying to legitimize anything put out by Geno, nor am I in a position to do so. I'm just pointing out that he may, or may not, know something by his obvious omission of who conventional wisdom has as a legitimate candidate.

That could also work in our favor. My better half is a Corvallis native and hates it there, loves it in the South. When we first hooked up in Southern Cal, all she could talk about was moving back to Oregon. Then she moved here...end of story...

He may or may not know something...hard to refute that since there aren't any other options.

I can understand that if we're talking about Nashville. But Stakville is probably a harder sell than Nashville for someone from the NW.

They played the 7th toughest schedule in the country per Boyd's rankings. Yeah, it was a down year for them, but if we played the kind of schedule they play, we'd have a lot more seasons like that in our record books too.

I hear your lightening in a bottle thoery, but find for me if you will which baseball coaches have coached their teams to national championships in consecutive years. I think that accomplishment surpasses any assumption of luck or "lightening in a bottle." Having said that, there are five or six coaches that i would be happy with besides Casey, but he is impressive.

the fact that osu's record wasn't all that great previous to the two national titles. The "lightning in a bottle" that he may have caught would have been a good group of players that came together as a great team that won back to back titles. Winning the titles was very impressive any way you cut it though. This year, things didn't go so great, although someone pointed out that they had an extremely tough schedule. Now, if next year, they are back in the world series, I'll be a believer. Of course that may be too late for us either way.

I would think that if we could get him here and he could set himself up with some good coaches famailiar with the south we could be in a good situation. It wouldnt hurt to have his recruiting ties out west to go with his assistants in the south

is that if Casey gets us to the postseason, he will know what to do.

The other thing about him only making the postseason 3 out of 14 times is you have to remember that OSU wasn't exactly the easiest place to win when he took over and you can't really boost your RPI up playing Idaho.

But yes, I do think that if he can get some good assistants- which is really the key for whoever we hire- he will do just fine. Heck, in all honesty if Raffo was hired and we got rid of McNickle and hired Virginia's pitching coach along with a really good hitting coach who can recruit- no idea who off the top of my head- he will succeed at State.

Actually, I will read to her anything of interest off the board...edited, of course...or show her the occasional fark...

Incidentally, I have her checking w/ her stepfather, who's a shrink in Corvallis, to see what he's hearing about Casey...
