I’m binge watching Peaky Blinders. I really enjoy the period nature and the setting in Birmingham. I’m honestly having difficulty understanding all of the dialogue, however, but I have hearing issues. The most noteworthy thing, is the nonstop cigarette smoking, especially by Thomas Shelby. I get that smoking gives characters style and what not, but it seems over the top. Same for Mad Men. Drinking too in both of these shows. Does this really add that much to the characters or the show?

Both of my parents smoked and they had lots of medical problems that can be tied to smoking. I hate smoking, so maybe I’m skewed.

That's the way it was up to the eighties, WWII era almost all the GI's smoked. I knew and worked with 2 packers regularly, one guy i knew smoked 5 packs of Pall Malls a day. It was a different generation quite different from today.

I'm not a prude , but i'll take smoking and drinking over dropping F bombs every other sentence. Especially the women. Doesn't offend me just over the top.

Tommy is pretty much the only smoker isn’t he? Love that show. At least Alfie is a teetotaler. 😎

The fact that the story starts soon after WWI is historical context. Chain smoking ones nt add any context.
Very Orwellian of you to think so....

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Those guys lived hard and played hard . They ate bacon & eggs, sandwiches and meat and in between smoked like chimneys and drank with the best of them. They did not eat avocado sandwiches, kale and gluten free anything. If you told them about their habits they'd slap you silly, it was a mind your business generation or get worked over, without lawsuits and the like.

You know what's offensive that guy on guy stuff. First i don't care but scenes depicting acts such as Rocket Man , about Elton John and his love life was unbearable.

Being an olde guy, I've always thought that movie makers who overdo smoking, drinking & cursing would benefit greatly if they hired consultants who have been around some. It is way overdone. It wasn't that exaggerated.

In order for period pieces to be somewhat on point, they would have to reflect that timeframe. I am not familiar with either show, but I would imagine the alcohol and nicotine consumption would be appropriate for the characters in that timeframe.

I enjoy watching old movies and TV shows. The style of dress, language words, the decor and autos. It kind of puts into perspective how much life has changed and the advances made over the years. “Isn’t that right, Doll Face?”. :)

Smoking and drinking once an episode would be one thing. They literally have main characters smoking and drinking in every scene.

I hear you (drinking movies upset me), but if you read James Joyce, for example, you’ll realize that this sort of behavior was widespread at that time and place. Add in the war and you’ll see lots of damaged people.

Peaky Blinders: Cillian Murphy has smoked over 3,000 (herbal) cigarettes playing Tommy Shelby

He asked the prop department to give an estimate

1644257296513.png
Tommy Shelby is almost never without a cigarette in hand in Peaky Blinders, puffing away pensively as he devises ways to outmanoeuvre his rivals.

“People did smoke all day [back then] and it just became a Tommy thing,” Cillian explained of his character’s habit.

They Are Always Smoking in 'Peaky Blinders,' but Are They Real Cigarettes?

BY SAMANTHA FARAGALLI YOUNGHANS
JAN. 15 2020, UPDATED 6:27 P.M. ET

If you're a fan of the hit Netflix show Peaky Blinders, then you know a lot of the characters, especially Thomas Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) are always smoking. That said, it's hard not to wonder whether or not they're actually smoking cigarettes. So, what are they smoking in Peaky Blinders? We investigated! Scroll down to see what we found out.

What are they smoking in 'Peaky Blinders'?

So it turns out, they're not actually smoking real tobacco cigarettes in the show, so no need to fret. In a previous interview, Helen McCrory (who plays Aunt Polly in the film) revealed that they actually use herbal cigarettes.
"They use herbal tobacco which has no nicotine and tastes horrible," the actress revealed to the Mirror. "They’re the same type they smoke in theatre

I used to go to plays for years and wonder why they had a [cannabis joint] on the go during a play and how they could remember their lines," she added. "It smells, to a layman like me, like someone is smoking cannabis. It’s just a bit funny and not like tobacco."
She followed up by saying that the props are "bloody horrible" and that they even leave black bits in the cast's nostrils. Eww!

Cillian has also addressed the fact that his character is rarely seen without a cigarette in his hand... and clarified that in real-life, he's not actually a smoker like Tommy is in the show. "I don’t smoke but people did smoke all day and night then," he revealed in a past interview with Birmingham Live. "I use herbal rose things, they’re like my five a day! I asked the prop guys to count how many we use during a series and it’s 3,000." Wow!

Last year, the cast was questioned about their smoking of cigarettes on the show once again. "Let me show you my lungs," Helen joked at a Q&A at the BFI on the South Bank in July 2019. "Cillian apparently, and I can't remember which season, the props guys reckoned about a thousand."
But she clarified by saying: "But no actors were killed in the making of Peaky Blinders. We don't inhale." Phew! That would seriously be a lot of cigarettes to inhale...

How many seasons of 'Peaky Blinders' are there?

So far, there have been five seasons of Peaky Blinders. The Netflix show kicked off its first season back in 2013, and the show's fifth season is currently airing on the streaming service and has been since September. Each episode contains six episodes, so there have been 30 episodes of the show so far, and yes, it is binge-worthy.
Now, fans are looking ahead for a Season 6, which show's creator, Steven Knight, recently teased. "I've just finished writing series six and it's the best yet," he told BBC in a January 2020 interview. "But we always say that." We can't wait!

Good choices on Peaky Blinders and Mad Men. I recommend using closed caption whenever dialogue becomes muddy. Don't be ashamed to use it.

No, I don't think it detracts from the shows at all but rather, shows what everyday life was like back then. Like the scene where Don Draper and family had a picnic in the park. They got up to leave and left their trash laying all over the place. That's what we did back then and didn't give it a second thought. In regard to smoking, I remember my dad smoking Camel no filters like a chimney. Eventually he paid the price.

Fast forward to today. Ever take note of how many drug commercials air right next to commercials for alcohol and fast/processed foods. There's a reason. From a marketing standpoint they complement one another. It was really no different back then than it is now. Once a nation of smokers, now a nation of overweight and drug addled. It is what it is.

They make a (fairly heavy handed ) point of normalizing cigarette and alcohol use in Mad Men; in one scene Don goes to his doctor for a check up and the doc says, 'Try to cut back on tobacco use to a few each day.' In another, Peggy goes to a doctor and finds out she's pregnant. The doc shows up like this:

Pfft. NEVER take political advice from an actor. The pro move is to take medical advice from a comedian.

Wait, the smoking bothers you more than the gratuitous violence in PB?
I'm with the others. I think they are just trying to be true to the time and place.
