Cousins' agent said he's confused by the pick and is concerned because it doesn't help the Falcons this season.
It's a raw deal for Penix as he'll be 28 when Cousins' current deal runs out. He could have gone somewhere with an opportunity to play much sooner.

Per the Falcons' GM, they anticipate winning so much that they won't be in position to draft a QB this high in the foreseeable future.
It looks like a bad decision for everyone.
Tons of quality players were available that would have filled positions of immediate need. Bad for the Falcons.
Cousins likely went there thinking the Falcons would use the draft to upgrade the roster around him. Bad for Cousins.
Penix is already 24 (or soon will be) and is gonna be pushing 30 by the time Cousins contracts is up. Bad for Penix.

Their GM says they wont pick this high again for several years, and maybe he is right, he may also be saying they may lose a future first rnd pick to the Vikings for tampering with Cousins.

You always hear the term its a copy cat league, and they seem to be copying the Packers strategy with Love, for sure.
They also seem to be treating this as 2 year deal with Cousins
2024: $25 million cap hit
2025: $40 million cap hit
2026: $57.5 million cap hit ($25 million dead money)
2026: $57.5 million cap hit ($12.5 million dead money)
That 2025 number balloons, but will be closer to the 10th highest hit than the 5th highest when all is said and done, and the Falcons figure to have more cap space to play with next year. The net effect is that the Falcons are paying Cousins quite well but not at, say, a top five level in 2024 and 2025, when they clearly expect to field a contending team. Cousins’ hits will make it easier to do that.
The two $57.5 million cap hits and the dramatic decrease in dead money in 2026 and 2027 tell you the Falcons are treating this contract like a two year deal. That’s wise, given that Cousins will be 38 years old by 2026, and we’ll talk more about that in a moment.

Yeah, most of Cousins' guaranteed money is in the first 2 years. MAYBE that's what's going into their thinking. If so, they better plan on winning A LOT over the next 2 years.
As a nominal Falcons fan I was cautiously optimistic for 2024 once they signed Cousins. He's a legit quarterback that shouldn't just throw games away like Ridder did last year. I thought the team would pick up some real pieces to improve the roster in the draft. Instead they draft Penix? I still don't understand the move. Just doesn't make sense.
