Fans but not Alumni?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if there are any individuals on this forum who are fans but are not alumni?

Allow me to provide some context:

I was a former recruit of USC , but unfortunately, my eligibility for collegiate sports was revoked by the NCAA due to complications involving sports agents. Despite this setback, my passion and support for the Gamecocks remain unwavering.

Even though I currently reside in California, I continue to follow the gamecocks teams closely. I make sure to stay updated on game results, watch the broadcasts whenever possible, and maintain a strong connection with the USC community online. USC will always hold a special place in my heart, regardless of where I live.

I am a fan of more that 62 years, a former student at the university who left when life happened, and who received a degree in business management from Limestone. I should add that my Dad was a lifelong fan who received hid undergraduate degree from Wofford and his M. Ed from Carolina. I witnessed his graduation from USC when I was around seven.

Born and raised in Columbia, then moved to Sumter for a couple years and then to Tennessee, which is where we lived when I graduated high school so went to college there.

Went to USC out of high school and just wasn't ready for college life so I went to work for several year and then decided ti try again but by that time I was involved with my soon to be wife and working a pretty heavy schedule and it just didn't work out, both kids graduated and I suppose you would call me a diehard fan! The only team I call my team besides the Braves.

Wife graduated from USCSOM, so that counts for something I guess.

Fan. Father is a USC alumni and started taking me to games at an early age. I in turn started taking my kids to games at an early age. They are now doing the same.
Same. Fan. My Dad graduated from USC, so I inherited the fandom. I spent a brief time at USC-Aiken, until as King said, "life happened".

I'm a fan of USC but the product of a community college. I started attending games with alumni who were more interested in tailgating than football. Now I'm not even interested in tailgating. My inlaws are rabid clemson fans so that just pushed me further in the opposite direction. To tell the truth until i was about 21 I had no interest in spectator sports.

Not directed at anyone in particular but, have you ever noticed that the most obnoxious fans (fans of any school), are usually the ones that never went to the school?

I've been in a few places around the country, and invariably when I run into one of thos over the top obnoxious fans, I ask "what year did you graduate", and in almost ever case, they weren't alumni.

As stated above, the in laws are that way. Only one of them actually attended clemson and he's the one that doesn't run his mouth about it. Two of them and my wife are Winthrop alumni. One of those has a masters from USC and still hates them. I've enjoyed my visits around them since November.

Been a fan of Carolina since late 60's...2 things caused me to be a Carolina fan.1) Frank McGuire had Carolina as a national power in hoops.Everybody wanted to be John Roche...Secondly several men in the area I grew up took an interest in me and took me to Carolina games as a young lad...No body from Clemson ever did that.
However when it came time to select a college, i received a scholarship to The Citadel...That's my alma mater and I love it dearly...When The Citadel plays Carolina I'm all about the Dogs.I spilled blood there. However I still pull hard for Carolina in all other circumstances.I would have gone to Carolina if life hadn't directed me to The Citadel. My wife and her family are Carolina alums as well.

USC grad/BS Marketing, but a big fan before attending. Had to overcome being dragged to Clemson games by my uncle in my youth, and went mainly for the tailgate food. Loved watching sports but hated Clemson.

Just a fan here.

Didn't care much for CFB until after I graduated HS. I graduated with Sidney Rice, so my affiliation followed him. Then, the glory years of Spurrier hooked me and I can't get enough.

When to Carolina for a year, left for the Air Force, graduated from Wayland Baptist University but have never wavered from being a Gamecock. On the GC club executive board for Horry County and a member of the Alumni Association.

Winthrop- MBA. Never stepped foot on Winthrop's campus. Took 100% of my classes as Coastal and USC. Was at Coastal when they were part of USC's system.

Beaufort native. Went to Davidson College for two years, then transferred to USC, where I graduated with a BS in Computer Science.
Am a Gamecock fan, although I'll follow Davidson Wildcat sports passively (like I do Gamecock golf and tennis, for example).

Like @ToddFlanders I wasn't a fan until I enrolled at USC...lucky enough to have been in school with Roche, Cremins, Ribock, Riker, Owens, Carver, Joyce, et al. Also, Suggs, Dickie Harris, Freddy Zeigler, Grantz, et al.

Missed a couple of semesters while in Basic Training and AIT -- returned and graduated without honors and with bar tabs at the Twilight Lounge (Slim) and Tally Ho (Guerry and Lenny).

I say this post is ********!!! My guess is, it's the creep that offended lots of fans with the singing of the alma mater and the toast at the end. Even if it isn't, I post on other boards...You should know full well that you can post on boards that are free or even those that charge a fee.

I stand behind what I said, this post is ********!!!

Grew up in a family of Gamecock fans, none of which ever went to college. It was all I knew. I wanted to go to Carolina, but had a full academic scholarship to two other places. As a first gen college grad, finances won.

I don't really understand your post. There was nothing serious in my message, I was just asking if people managed to fit in as a fan and not alumni. No need to be disrespectful, I just asked a question about the fan base and not about who can write what.

I was accepted but didn't know what I wanted to study and decided it was too expensive to major in "undecided" KY dad went to Med-School there however and a large swath of my family extended family went to either Carolina or a satellite campus. I also got friends to go taking them to games before deciding it wasn't the right choice for me at the time.

A large number of loyal fans are no more than high school grads. This is true at all schools, and as for obnoxious fans, they are in large numbers across the country. Just for the record , I am a USC Alum

Lifelong fan who was born into being a Gamecock but not Alumni. My parents graduated from Carolina and took me to every single home game as a kid…… So you’re talking about those horrible sparky woods and Brad Scott days where we were lucky to win a game to two all season. With that type of record be glad you have outside fans at all lmao.

I graduated from Wilton-Elko High School in 1964. Came to USC (started at USC Aiken extension for a year and a half. Came to the main campus in 1966. Remember seeing Skip Kickey and Mike Grosso the first day of clssses. Heyday of basketball then. Graduated in 1969 on the five year plan. School of Business then. Behind the Russell House. Lived in Preston. Got an MBA there on the ETV program in 1976, which was a new program in 1973 I think. Been in the GC for 39 years now. Still go football games, baseball and WBB primarily. Remember when Sarge Frye field had two sets of bleachers, a clay bank, and a mobile refreshment stand. Field house for basketball during the early McGuire years. Drank beer at the Opus on South Main. Crazy.

In today's society people are too easily offended (or "outraged!"). My take is, those who say they are offended are inexperienced in the game of life and haven't EVEN begun to realize what they may encounter in their career(s) and relationships. God help them...

my immediate family (father-rip, mother, brothers) are all Gamecock fans but I’m the only graduate- class of 90 .

my wife’s family was military and moved to Columbia in the late 70s for my father-in-law’s final stint (DI at Fort Jackson). they adopted the Gamecocks upon arrival. my wife ended up graduating from USC as well.

Its harder to grow up a Gamecock then to just be a fan because you went to the school.
