@RyanSnyder - This is exactly why I am not a fan of some of the contributors to this site. At about the 42:00 mark, a question (or comment) about Franklin’s new contract paying him $8mm a year for poor to average results the last two years pops up. Nate condescendingly explains the following to all the dullards watching before attempting an answer of sorts:
1. Fans do not know how contracts work (derp!). That, when Franklin signs a six year contract, it’s a known fact it will be renegotiated in two years, and that rumors about other schools pursuing him have nothing to do with it, and that all his contracts have been handled this way (as if that makes it any better). Have all been renegotiated during the season? I don’t believe so. I also do not believe Penn State and/or Franklin are contractually bound to renegotiate every two years - just that it
has happened that way so far (and usually after his name appears at the top of every major HC vacancy in college football).
2. His $8mm a year contract doesn’t start until 2022, so he was *actually* only paid $7mm for crappy results this year (again as if that makes anything better). Petty.
3. He then wonders why Franklin is judged on only his last two years of work, and not some other arbitrary timeline (hey - maybe because as noted, he negotiates his contract every two years?). Franklin is lucky though - ask LSU what they’re willing to do to an underperforming HC who won a National Championship two years ago. Oh - and last year doesn’t count. At all. As far as Penn State is concerned, so his raise and new contract is apparently because of the 11 win seasons he had years ago. Though I bet if I asked Franklin, he’d tell me the paycheck he received for a full year’s work and a losing season was very real.
All to say I won’t be watching/listening to the podcast again. Talking down to fans - especially when you’re suggesting opinions as facts and simultaneously defending Penn State for its recklessness and Franklin for losing seasons - isn’t smart business. The arrogance is palpable.
