We went to an adult 'board game' night on Friday and though most of the time was spent on charades, a small group of us stayed for a bit to play a game I'd never heard of (and assumed was made in the 60's or something, but nope, way more recent than that...) called 'Secret Hitler.' It's a social deduction game with 'fascists' vs. 'liberals' with one person assigned as 'Hitler'. At the beginning of the game, the fascists quietly reveal themselves to each other, and Hitler has to reveal himself to them, but Hitler does not know who they are. Then it is a series of card plays, interrogations, and feints with each side trying to progress to the end. Along the way, players get certain powers (such as having someone reveal their allegiance to you, or, you can 'kill' a player). If you 'kill' Hitler, the game is over and the liberals win. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and I feel like there are probably a lot of these adult games out there I'm missing out on. Anyone know of any others?

What happened to simple Key Parties? This seems really complicated.

If you are playing adult board games, you need this… Cards against Humanity.

With a title like that, I would refuse to play that game.

It's not a board game, and I don't think it's quite as complicated, but One Night Ultimate Werewolf seems to have many of the elements you described in the game you cited.

We play a lot at family gatherings. Catan, Azul, 7 Wonders, WIngspan, Ticket to Ride, Rail Baron (I guess new versions its called Boxcars, ours is old), Pandemic. My son insists on the occasional Monopoly, Exploding Kittens, Uno type games and I humor him, but I can't stand the pure luck no strategy at all types. I'm a middle of the road type, I want strategy, but not so deep its work.

I am a huge fan, it’s one of my favorite pastimes. I like the broader term “tabletop games” because it also encompasses games that are purely card-based and have no board, or games like Blokus and Rummikub that were mentioned above, and even role-playing games like the classic Dungeons & Dragons (and yes, I am THAT much of a nerd lol.)

I own and play so many games that I have an app to keep track of them and play histories (Board Game Stats.)

There truly is a whole hobbyist culture out there around tabletop games. What I really like is that there are games that exist which are themed around almost any area of interest you can think of — everything from various historical events to branches of science to genres of fiction, and licensed games based on themes across popular culture — so many popular movies or movie franchises have games based on them, for example. Hell, I even have a game called Bob Ross: The Art of Chill which is pretty fun btw 🤣

Another great thing is there are games that appeal to varying age ranges and involve a broad spectrum of levels of complexity. Some are intensely strategic in nature, some far more luck-based as mentioned above. The degree of how fiercely competitive you can get also varies. For families in particular, I like a lot of games that are actually cooperative in nature, where everyone playing is actually working together to try and accomplish a common goal rather than defeat each other. (Horrified is one such game that I like a lot.)

I was going to call out a bunch of examples, but instead I’ll reference two websites:

Boardgamegeek.com is the ultimate repository of info on every board game or tabletop game you could imagine.

Thedicetower.com is a great place to start though. They do brief YouTube reviews of games. I recommend checking out their “Top Ten Lists” section. It will help you quickly find great samplings of games around so many different themes and genres.
