Waiting for my daughter to finish her piano lesson and listening to the VT/Marshal pre-game show and they mention VT’s maroon color is ‘Chicago Maroon’ - assume this is from U Chicago. Anyone know why VT doesn’t just say ‘maroon’?

If (when) Pry gets fired and Manny leaves, does Franklin bring him back? Hope not.

Because Chicago Maroon is a specific shade of maroon, and it was popularized by the University of Chicago, about 4 years before VaTech used it. VaTech's colors used to be black and gray. The University of Chicago was a pretty good football team around this time, so the school went with Chicago Maroon to capitalize on the popularity along with burnt orange as their primary colors.

I work with two VaTech grads. The unnecessary information I get on VaTech is interminable. I guess some of it stuck.

As an aside, the reason the Chicago Bears have their color scheme is due to the popularity of the University of Illinois (and not Northwestern). Ditto for Green Bay who used the Green and Gold of Notre Dame for their color scheme.

And now back to your regularly scheduled program.

I had a VA Tech grad tell me they changing mascots from the Turkey to the Opossum. Why? they play dead at Home ,and get crushed on the road, like they did at Marshall!

Just a slight correction, it’s true that the Pack did copy Notre Dame’s colors. However, Curly Lambeau used blue and gold. Later, for a few years, they dropped the blue and used only gold as the primary color. They didn’t change to green, originally a Kelly green, then later a deeper forest green, until about the 50’s. Vince Lombardi added the distinctive G to the helmets.

Point taken.

As a corollary to this, the reason the Detroit Lions did not copy the color scheme of the nearby Michigan Wolverines is because back even then, everyone knew that Michigan Sucks.

That was a complete dynamite win for the Herd. Notre Dame last year, VT on Saturday. Having a great runner like Ali really makes Marshall go. Unfortunately I don’t think I can get down for a game this year.

I wonder where he got this idea?

Recently, I was watching a Virginia Tech “Hokies” football game on TV. I didn’t have any real interest in what was going on until I got a look at their mascot, which, for those of you who don’t know, is a turkey. It's a turkey called a “Hokie,” which is the nickname for Virginia Tech.

My curiosity peaked, and I set out to learn why any fan in his/her right mind would want to be called a hokie, a turkey, and more specifically, in agricultural terms, a castrated male turkey. Sometimes it is good to look up terms and their multiple meanings before you settle on a name.

More useless information......

The Atlanta Falcons chose their primary colors as a nod to UGA.

Slug you don’t need a lot of coin for a Marshall game! I was down for the Louisiana game last year - turned out to be a stinker and the Herd got waxed pretty good. I parked at the tire store on 3rd Ave for like $20 and bought a ticket on the street for $20 or $25.

That was the game with the long weather delay. So I just walked over to Fat Patty’s and waited it out over a couple pops.

I have your phone number. If I can’t make football I want to come down for a basketball game. I’ll give you a call.

Okay, so who had it first?

Georgia or Green Bay?

Chicago Bears or Cincinnati Reds?
