Post-war culture. During the '30s assassination of political and military (faction) leaders was pretty commonplace.Bonkers. It’s very against their culture to do something like this.
But with the amount of copycat crimes how many people with ill intent are going to try and make their own homemade guns? I believe this murder is going to have far reaching implications. It still very much is. Unlike here - exception, not the rule. I lived in Japan for three years - most police didn’t carry when I was there.
you assume that their society is as sick as ours is - I'd bet against that assumptionBut with the amount of copycat crimes how many people with ill intent are going to try and make their own homemade guns? I believe this murder is going to have far reaching implications.

Japan is not a society without a criminal element. Also copycat crimes have no borders. This can happen anywhere.you assume that their society is as sick as ours is - I'd bet against that assumption
Of course they have problems- who doesn't? But that doesn't make them as dismal of a society as we have become.Japan is not a society without a criminal element. Also copycat crimes have no borders. This can happen anywhere.
I must have missed it. I’m probably better off for it."Report" and "ignore" were very useful this morning.

Japan gets about 20-25 shooting deaths a year, one every two weeks, best I can tell, so it’s not as if they consider themselves immune to gun violence. For countries like Japan who thought they were safe from gun violence due to strict gun laws this was a shock. This killer purchased the various parts he used online and was able to make a muzzle like gun. No law can stop someone from making a gun and this was the wake-up call to all the countries who thought their gun laws protected them, such as Japan.
Security for Japanese PMs isn't particularly robust. While living there, I was in rooms (along with hundreds of others) with PMs 3-4 times I do not recall ever being checked or seeing anyone else checked (one caveat: tickets were required to be obtained in advance, so perhaps there were background checks). The folks who make decisions regarding security saw no need beyond what there was. Suspect they will reappraise that.Japan gets about 20-25 shooting deaths a year, one every two weeks, best I can tell, so it’s not as if they consider themselves immune to gun violence.
The real story here is how badly his security failed.
Security isn't absolute. A person living in Japan is far less likely to be killed by a gun than one in the US. If you want to draw comparisons, look at the number of deaths by lightening strike. For countries like Japan who thought they were safe from gun violence due to strict gun laws this was a shock. Or is this the troll attempt within the troll attempt?
Japan never thought it was "safe from gun violence." Because gun violence happens there. They just make attempts ... successfully ... to limit that violence. Obviously.
