Fan reaction (at least on the Junkies) was mostly negative. I don't know why there is so much effort to give a team name such importance and gravity; have fun with it. It's all so serious anymore. It's fine I think, but just feels generic.

It's too late to unring this bell, but man, why not make some effort to retain a Native American presence - change the name to the Garnett/Maroon and modify the logo (even though I think it's one of the best NA logos in all of sports). I get DS is bowing to political pressure in DC to gain favor for a new downtown stadium, but if I were Washington ownership I'd be ringing the bell about the Braves, Chiefs, and Blackhawks. If it's as simple as a namechange to something more dignified, I would have tried to make that happen. Maybe there was no chance of that. Ah well.

I would have went with Foxhounds or something to embrace the rich fox hunting/riding culture in the area (and no one uses that name) or just went bonkers with something like Dreadwyrms (Wyrms for short). Have video with dragons swarming DC, etc. would look super cool and unique.

Yeah, when the Oilers moved from Houston to Tennessee they should have kept the same name. Like the Jazz did when they moved from New Orleans to Utah; which as everyone knows, is the home of Jazz in the Wasatch Mountain range. ;)

I didn't follow so don't know the background for "Commanders", but it seems arrogant to me. Intended or not it comes off as more a homage to the politicans.
With all the memorials in DC to those who fought for our country, and plenty were commanders, something more appropriate to honor the very larger number of guys in the trenches would have been far more fitting from my perspective. Hero's is probably not it but something that reflects on the over 2.7 million dead and wounded since 1776. Help me out...what should it have been...Veterans...what do you think? [edit: oops. I see the idea of something 'fun' which I would also agree with if they weren't looking to honor our heritage in some way,]

Or the Lakers? Where’s the water in Southern California?

Hail to the commies

Snyder had a layup with some of the good suggestions that were out there, and so of course he managed to pick one of the worst ones. That black third jersey is brutal.

Teams generally try to use nicknames which reflect the history or spirit of a city. War casualties came from all over the country, not just DC. Also, to me it would seem disrespectful to use war casualties to promote a professional sports team.

The "Commanders" sucks as a nickname. As noted above, there is a 100% chance opposing fans will call them the Commies. I thought for sure the new name would include "hogs" as a shout out to past teams.

Any time you're making a brand change with new names, logos, wordmarks, you're going to catch some pushback and ridicule. It's like artwork, people respond subjectively. "Commanders" doesn't light me up and would not have been my first choice among the final seven options, but in a week or two the folderol will die down and people will become accustomed to "Washington Commanders" by next fall.

I really don't mind the name Commanders, but that generic "W" logo is just terrible. Think of the money they paid to a marketing firm to design something like that. With the abounding imagery in DC to incorporate into a creative logo (monument, capital building, white house, military, etc. etc.) that's the best they could come up with?

I wonder if their new mascot will be modeled to look like Custer - another famous casualty of the American Indian.

This organization had a golden opportunity to fix all the damage they've done to the fanbase over the past decade, and they blew it. Something like this would have worked:

"We've spoken to people in the Native American community over the last couple of years, and the overwhelming consensus is that they take no issue with our name. Our research found that the people who take most issue with the name are people who don't even care about football. They aren't fans. We are done listening to those people. The fans want the name back, so we're bringing it back. We are the Redskins."

I guarantee you that if they did something like this, season ticket sales would have skyrocketed. But as someone who hates the Redskins, I'm glad they didn't. Go Commies!

Big swing and miss. For those of us who served, the Commander is a Navy or Coast Guard rank of O-5, equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel in the other branches. It is outranked by Captains and Admirals.

OTOH, the Commander in Chief is one person, who resides in the White House. There are other so-called Commanders, but they reside at Commands, and not in Washington DC. Then there are the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who reside in a big building in Arlington, and consist of the Chief of Naval Operations, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, the Chief of Staff of the Army, and the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Not liking this choice at all.

I will put money on it that the "Commanders" name doesn't last 5 years. Special interest groups will associate the name with the military or people will be referring to them as the "Commies". It will not last.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff are also located in the DC area. So....yeah...Commanders. You are making way too much of this than you need to. Step away from the 24 hour cable news networks for a bit and go take a refreshing walk. 🤦‍♂️

Not a fan but what do I care, I am an Iggles phan.

They should have went with the old USFL team, Washington Federals. Washington Warriors would have been better then the Commanders. Commanders just sounds dumb but who am I to judge. Good luck with it.

I don't watch ANY news network, or read/follow any US news outlet on the internet or radio. I get all my 'news' and 'current events' by checking this site and occasionally BBC, or (a-ha), a friend who calls me every day to piss in my ear.
No walk today as I plan to walk behind my snow thrower tomorrow.

Joint Chiefs of Staff are in Arlington, and are not Commanders. They are chiefs of staff. Maybe the Arlington Chiefs of Staff would be a better name?

Commanders are at commands, and there aren't any commands in DC.

How will they re-do their song?

Hail to the Commanders
Hail Victory
Commanders on the warpath
Fight, for old DC
I wondered about the choice of a three-syllable name and had to ask if a wish to ditch the song had any influence.

As others have mentioned, Commanders won't be their name. It'll be Commies. At least to everyone who isn't a Commie fan. They're headquartered in the hub of government, their colors are variations of red and yellow, and they're the Commies. All the work and build up ... for that?
