Out of an abundance of ignorance on the subject. Is this "deductible" for FedEx ?Agree with both of you. It just sucks for us, more than anything.
And I will say this is still about paying for wins, rather than paying for a player's NIL, so it's a different kind of 'demand'. If it wasn't Fedex would be paying all the best players in the country for their actual advertising value.
This is another reason I don't think you'll see an NFL model in college. The schools are more than happy to let their boosters/alumni/donors/corporate sponsors foot the player bill - which is the way it's always been.
Collective donations are not, so I guess it depends on how they plan to implement. This may just be an announcement. I am guess they'll contract directly with the players, with the help of that agency in the article, basically like contract labor. So it comes off their bottom line I guess, and in that way, tax deductible as it is just added expense.Out of an abundance of ignorance on the subject. Is this "deductible" for FedEx ?
Back in 2010, FedEx offered $10 Million a year to any of the big conferences to take Memphis. This is when the Fred Smith, FedEx owner's son, Cannon Smith, was qb at Memphis.FedEx commits $25 million to Memphis NIL over next five years

But what about the courts? Players are going to want a slice of that tv money pie, and the courts are going to give it to them. This is another reason I don't think you'll see an NFL model in college. I think Memphis path to a power conference is to schedule all the power conference teams they can for home and homes. Instead they have maybe one power conference opponent and 2-3 sisters of the poor OOC games.Back in 2010, FedEx offered $10 Million a year to any of the big conferences to take Memphis. This is when the Fred Smith, FedEx owner's son, Cannon Smith, was qb at Memphis.
I think that's going to prove much more difficult to do, than these previous restrictive things about making money off their own likeness, etc. Unless the schools want to do it.But what about the courts? Players are going to want a slice of that tv money pie, and the courts are going to give it to them.
I don't think they are looking for a return. It's essentially a donation. FedEx has given a ton of money to the University, and this is just an indirect donation to Memphis athletics. What's the value in it for FedEx? Seems like a waste of $25 million outside of stroking some UofM alum egos locally. Is there really a return having some no name Tigers sit at a table for a half time meet and greet with a FedEx logo on the background or tablecloth? Nobody gives a **** about these kids enough to have them influence their parceling decisions. Not even in Memphis.
That said, good for Memphis. I wish we had a FedEx to make dumb financial decisions on our athletics programs.
I think we are approaching nil incorrectly given our lack of interest in funding...
We need to use the NIL to buy refs.
Hmmm.... they may compete for even more football guys that we recruit.
But this is the way nil should be. State desperately needs more corporate sponsors.
Interested if stockholders are okay with non charitable donations to football players above and beyond a free education.I don't think they are looking for a return. It's essentially a donation. If they do and I'm an AD from the bigger schools I certainly wouldn't be giving them paydays to play my school. Use siege tactics and starve them out. Oh, you can't sustain an athletic budget without our payday??? Man that is just too bad. I hate that. Call FedEx i guess.Hmmm.... they may compete for even more football guys that we recruit.

We can't outbid Bama.I think we are approaching nil incorrectly given our lack of interest in funding...

One big step in the right direction would be priority points for season tickets for NIL contributions.Over the last 1-2 years, it seems like the best thing we can say about NIL and State is that it's allowed us to just barely hang on to our own players. Tolu, Zavion, and Dakota to name a few. It sure hasn't gotten us anywhere with recruits and transfers, though, and now that our AD (whose alleged primary focus is NIL) has been here for a full year, it'd be nice to hear about plans for change. We don't seem to be making a whole lot of progress here at all, at least as it pertains to actually landing kids out of the portal that are desperately needed in all sports
Damn. Wish my chase team nonprofit could find a corporate sponsor for a fraction of 1% of that.FedEx commits $25 million to Memphis NIL over next five years

Donations have increased, but IMO not enough to move the needleOver the last 1-2 years, it seems like the best thing we can say about NIL and State is that it's allowed us to just barely hang on to our own players. I'm curious as to how you know this outside of who transfers here. If that's your evidence, fair enough.Donations have increased, but IMO not enough to move the needle
I think that should be evidence enough that we’re not doing something right in the NIL/portal world we live in now.I'm curious as to how you know this outside of who transfers here. If that's your evidence, fair enough.
If that happens, I give you your next school to explode onto the scene (honestly, I can't figure why they haven't already). I'm sure some bright soul could easily wash casina (note the Haley reference there) money through there where it was clean enough to throw a chunk at NIL which would blow FedEx out of the water.By the way, y'all see the law passed in Virginia?
Virginia law allows schools to pay athletes for NIL
Schools in Virginia will be able to directly pay athletes via name, image and likeness deals thanks to a state law signed Thursday morning.www.espn.com
If other states follow, I believe this means school can pay the nil directly to the players.
Nope. Vegas is going all in on professional sports. Casinos could already be paying UNLV athletes if they wanted to. But nobody’s going to want to travel there to watch a G5 college game.If that happens, I give you your next school to explode onto the scene (honestly, I can't figure why they haven't already). "nobody’s going to want to travel there to watch a G5 college game" True! But, unlike Starkvegas where people primarily visit to go to the game, in Las Vegas there are thousands and thousands of tourists there at any one time and a LOT of those are sports fans. They would get enough walk-up traffic to pack the place. Play the games in the Raider's stadium with the best college players money can buy and make it an 'event' and I promise you people would be tripping over themselves to rent luxury suites every Saturday night.Nope. We all know people.I'm curious as to how you know this outside of who transfers here. If that's your evidence, fair enough

I think you have to look at the results.I'm curious as to how you know this outside of who transfers here. If that's your evidence, fair enough.
I'd be pissed if I was a FedEx shareholder. This isn't about marketing for FedEx.What's the value in it for FedEx? Seems like a waste of $25 million outside of stroking some UofM alum egos locally. Yep. Our NIL has increased by 10% while some have increased theirs by 50% or more. Ours is getting stronger but at a smaller rate than our opponents so we are falling behind. Note:10% and 50% are just for example.I think you have to look at the results.
What else is there to judge our NIL by? Some dude/writer/admin/podcaster saying "we are in great shape". ********. Show me receipts or show me recruits. Nothing else matters.
We've been told, "our NIL is getting stronger" for over a year now. Nothing to show for it. Now "our NIL getting stronger" is likely very true. But phrasing it that way is disingenuous. And the people saying that know it.
They haven't been buying big name 5 star recruits, playing in an NFL stadium, having stars sing the National Anthem and/or perform at halftime or having casinos/resorts promote them as a big deal. I still agree with you that you wouldn't draw a lot of people to Vegas just for a UNLV game but you would grab a ton of people off of the strip who are already in Vegas since the Raider's stadium is within walking distance. They’re going to go to the Raiders games. Where have all these tourists been for UNLV games for all these years?
And being the (or one of) poorest states in the country that also has to share its students/alumni with another SEC school. We are splitting poor into parts.I am guessing State's issue with NIL is...... Rural area and lack of corporations near by. Also, an alumni base that is mainly disinterested.
There is 14,000 members in the BC and only 2/3 of those are active members.
