Agree with both of you. It just sucks for us, more than anything.
And I will say this is still about paying for wins, rather than paying for a player's NIL, so it's a different kind of 'demand'. If it wasn't Fedex would be paying all the best players in the country for their actual advertising value.

Collective donations are not, so I guess it depends on how they plan to implement. This may just be an announcement. I am guess they'll contract directly with the players, with the help of that agency in the article, basically like contract labor. So it comes off their bottom line I guess, and in that way, tax deductible as it is just added expense.
What's the value in it for FedEx? Seems like a waste of $25 million outside of stroking some UofM alum egos locally. Is there really a return having some no name Tigers sit at a table for a half time meet and greet with a FedEx logo on the background or tablecloth? Nobody gives a **** about these kids enough to have them influence their parceling decisions. Not even in Memphis.

But what about the courts? Players are going to want a slice of that tv money pie, and the courts are going to give it to them.
I think Memphis path to a power conference is to schedule all the power conference teams they can for home and homes. Instead they have maybe one power conference opponent and 2-3 sisters of the poor OOC games.
Line up all the B12 and ACC games you can and let the chips fall where they may. It would make for more entertaining football for their fans too.

I think that's going to prove much more difficult to do, than these previous restrictive things about making money off their own likeness, etc. Unless the schools want to do it.
I don't think they are looking for a return. It's essentially a donation. FedEx has given a ton of money to the University, and this is just an indirect donation to Memphis athletics.
Over the last 1-2 years, it seems like the best thing we can say about NIL and State is that it's allowed us to just barely hang on to our own players. Tolu, Zavion, and Dakota to name a few. It sure hasn't gotten us anywhere with recruits and transfers, though, and now that our AD (whose alleged primary focus is NIL) has been here for a full year, it'd be nice to hear about plans for change. We don't seem to be making a whole lot of progress here at all, at least as it pertains to actually landing kids out of the portal that are desperately needed in all sports
Interested if stockholders are okay with non charitable donations to football players above and beyond a free education.
Charitable contributions and investments in local education provide an intangible goodwill (stockholders aren't completely soulless and do appreciate positive community impact from charity - I am fine with that as a stockholder myself) and possibly a talent pipeline through investments in the various degreed programs they recruit from. Athletics recruiting slush fund? That would cross my tolerance as an equity owner interested mostly in ROI.
You can argue that the amount is de minimus and ultimately inconsequential. I can buy that to an extent but appearances do matter. What other dumb commitments do they make?
If they do and I'm an AD from the bigger schools I certainly wouldn't be giving them paydays to play my school. Use siege tactics and starve them out. Oh, you can't sustain an athletic budget without our payday??? Man that is just too bad. I hate that. Call FedEx i guess.
The first time they poach one of our players we better not give them another payday. Too many other schools out there.
One big step in the right direction would be priority points for season tickets for NIL contributions.

Nope. Vegas is going all in on professional sports. Casinos could already be paying UNLV athletes if they wanted to. But, unlike Starkvegas where people primarily visit to go to the game, in Las Vegas there are thousands and thousands of tourists there at any one time and a LOT of those are sports fans. They would get enough walk-up traffic to pack the place. Play the games in the Raider's stadium with the best college players money can buy and make it an 'event' and I promise you people would be tripping over themselves to rent luxury suites every Saturday night.

What else is there to judge our NIL by? Some dude/writer/admin/podcaster saying "we are in great shape". ********. Show me receipts or show me recruits. Nothing else matters.
We've been told, "our NIL is getting stronger" for over a year now. Nothing to show for it. Now "our NIL getting stronger" is likely very true. But phrasing it that way is disingenuous. And the people saying that know it.
I'd be pissed if I was a FedEx shareholder. This isn't about marketing for FedEx.
Yep. Our NIL has increased by 10% while some have increased theirs by 50% or more. Ours is getting stronger but at a smaller rate than our opponents so we are falling behind. Note:10% and 50% are just for example.
I am guessing State's issue with NIL is...... Rural area and lack of corporations near by. Also, an alumni base that is mainly disinterested.

They haven't been buying big name 5 star recruits, playing in an NFL stadium, having stars sing the National Anthem and/or perform at halftime or having casinos/resorts promote them as a big deal. I still agree with you that you wouldn't draw a lot of people to Vegas just for a UNLV game but you would grab a ton of people off of the strip who are already in Vegas since the Raider's stadium is within walking distance.
And being the (or one of) poorest states in the country that also has to share its students/alumni with another SEC school. We are splitting poor into parts.
