VEILLEUX vs. RUTGERS

The kid matured rapidly as the game went on. Codutti touches upon it a little bit, but the thing I liked about Veilleux was his willingness to throw contested balls downfield -- 50/50 balls if you will -- and trust that his guy would out-athlete the defender. From everything I read about the Yurcich offense, these 50-50 shots were encouraged, but it seems like Clifford has been somewhat hesitant to throw them this year...like he's almost been TOO conservative and TOO concerned with having a decent TD-INT ratio instead of taking the necessary risks, like McSorley in 16 and 17, to win games. Other than the KLS completion vs. Wisconsin and the Dotson INT vs. Iowa, I can't remember a deep ball that Clifford threw this season that wasn't wide open.

Yes, it was Rutgers, but Veilleux seemed to take more of those downfield shots even when it wasn't open - showing a willingness to push the issue and try to make things happen.

Just my two cents (obviously)

His accuracy made a huge difference in this game. The back shoulder TD to Washington, SC probably doesn't throw that pass. The pressure in his face throw to Washington was on the money. The TD to Meiga was an excellent "he's wide open, just deliver a catchable pass" that we have seen missed.

He definitely needs work on the 3 step drop quick passes, primarily just learning to trust that it's there quicker. He has good touch on the short throws. Just needs the timing so Cain can catch the ball moving up field and in stride.

I was impressed with his composure in the pocket, especially when under pressure. Couple of times he threw a completion a half second before getting smacked. Didn't see him moving into pressure (see SC do that too often), and gained yards with his feet when he could.

An extremely tiny thing... his fake hand clap vs the real one is too different to have any effect. Next time he should try mixing up his real clap between a short quick one and a more elongated one. That could give the offense just a split second extra reaction time.

CV did a real nice job. For a true freshman, let alone a young man who didn't even have a high school season last year, to be able to jump in and function well in his first collegiate action was nice to see. And you can't help but to feel happy for him. It also may serve to support Yurcich a bit, as a QB developer, after what happened at Iowa.
It also was Rutgers. Rutgers. So it all needs to be taken with a large grain of salt with regard to CV being the long-term answer. But it could have been a disaster on Saturday - and it wasn't - so congrats to CV, and the future looks a bit brighter at the QB position than it did just 4 days ago.
