Because of the rules about byes, Texas and Penn State arguably have easier paths to the final 4 than the teams who beat them in the conference championship games:

9 Tennessee @ 8 Ohio State ---> 1 Oregon
12 Clemson @ 5 Texas ---> 4 Arizona State
10 Indiana @ 7 Notre Dame ---> 2 Georgia
11 SMU @ 6 Penn State ---> 3 Boise State

I expect Georgia and Oregon to make it anyway, but Notre Dame and Ohio State/Tennessee are tougher opponents of the teams Texas or Penn State will face on their way to final 4.

Imagine this bracket instead, just using the committee rankings without reserving byes (and yes, it would probably be even better with mathematically valid, auditable computer rankings). Also even better to flip a few teams to avoid rematches if possible...

9 Boise State @ 8 Indiana ---> 1 Oregon
12 Clemson @ 5 Notre Dame ---> 4 Penn State
10 SMU @ 7 Tennessee ---> 2 Georgia
11 Arizona State @ 6 Ohio State ---> 3 Texas

Given what is current, 100% healthy and ready to go, I’d take Georgia’s draw all day long.

I would take Texas's draw over Georgia's, most likely. I get that it's 2 games instead of 1, but I'll be a lot more surprised if Texas loses at home to Clemson (#15 FPI) or at a neutral site to Arizona State (#22 FPI) than I will if Georgia loses a neutral site game to Notre Dame (#2 FPI) or even Indiana (#10 FPI).

Notre Dame is one of the least scary teams in the entire playoff to me. Arizona St is pretty much the hottest team in the country right now. Clemson…never know which version of that team will show and Texas has seemed vulnerable all season. We all get to see how it plays out starting in a couple of weeks.

Giving Boise and ASU high seeds and byes just because they are weak conference champs throws it out of whack. Conference “equity” doesn’t exist , they just make it rigged for whoever gets the patsy draw.

seed the teams 1 -12 based on strength regardless of conference. That’s how basketball does it.

Arizona St. is going to get a big wake up call in Columbus. This game won't be close.

I don’t think Georgia would want to trade places with anyone. Their draw is incredible.

Penn State could certainly lose to Boise State, they are far better than any team they’ve beaten this season.
