the right move if you are the 1 seed at home is to save your ace. If you lose the first game, and you use your third or fourth starter, at least you still have your ace available for the elimination game against the 2 or 3 seeds #2 starter. And you also have your ace available in case the 2 or 3 seed saves their ace. Assuming you win the losers bracket game, you then can throw your #2 starter against the loser of the winners bracket #3. You do run into a disadvantage if you make it through the losers bracket because then you are down to your #4 (or #3 if he didn't pitch the opener) and #5 starter.

But more than likely the #1 seed will win, and then you have your ace going against a 2 or 3 seeds #2, and then you can throw your #2 starter in the Championship round.

Also, I still stand by if you are a 1 seed at home and you can't beat a 4 seed with your #3 or #4, you probably shouldn't win that Regional anyway. You have got to take care of business.</p>

not to mention that Florida State could've thrown their ace tonight and they still wouldn't be winning.

They always seem to have one of the best records in college baseball and get a national seed, and yet have trouble getting out of their own regional, or not making it out at all.

FSU sucks in the post-season.

Of course, last year we had Easley & Jeffery R. (among others).

Anyway, I wouldn't pick on FSU after they botched a regional to Miss. State in 2007.

They seem to melt when the pressure is on (not to mention they melted in the face of Ron Polk, which is evidence of major wimp-ism.).

...from Ole Miss's regional history. We are 7 for 7 as regional champs when we win the first round game, and 0 for 6 when losing the first round game, with the likely losing Coral Gables result pending.

What you advocate makes sense from a baseball perspective. But the criticism is unmerciful for those coaches who "save" their aces as a #1 host and promptly end up in the loser's bracket.

ya'll are winning the first round game b/c you are the much better team playing a four seed. Ya'll generally lose first round games when you are having to play a comparable team that's a 2 or a 3. And the one game you lost recently as a 1 seed to WKU wasn't b/c of your pitching. Additionally, Bianco has always had staffs that had similar pitchers with no absolute clear cut No. 1 guy so he's never really had to make this decision.

If you are a one seed, you just don't throw your ace on Friday.

and here's how I'll manipulate the stat:

Bianco has never won a regional in which he didn't win his first two games.

Therefore, the 2nd game is equally or more important as/than the first. Half the teams in the tourney win their first game every year.

I will agree with 8dog and say you save your ace and hope you win game 1. If you lose game win 1 and win game 2 you are in the exact same spot as if you win game 1 and lose game 2.
