I wrestled in high school in late 1960s. We would wrestle in a very hot room with sweats on and lose 6 to 10 pounds in 2 days before matches. I would RESTRICT EATING for 2 days and then BINGE after matches-quite unhealthy but we did not know better or talk about it then (there were No NUTRITIONISTS or sports psychologists) to work with us of course, especially at the high school level. I would OBSESS on food like I never had while I was restricting eating.I was a good not great high school wrestler. After high school, I wrestled intramarually in college but never lost weight. I was at a good weight except for the last few years as I know have chronic pain and snack too much.
I just read article in NY times about dealing with food cravings as it clearly indicate that individuals who drastically reduce calories for a diet develop increased (markedly) food obsessions and cravings. Now, they use mindful techniques to deal with cravings, Obviously obesity is a major challenge in our society!
So I follow wrestling on the board but do NOT know what goes on with college wrestling now with weight control/losing weight. Are many college wrestlers losing quite a bit of weight to get to a lower weight class? Do they talk about dealing with obsessive eating/obsessions from weight loss/restrictive dieting? I am sure the top wrestlers do MUCH better than I did 50 some years ago as I started hating wrestling because of the weight loss/restrictive DIETING.
I remember a national article from several years ago. A college kid skipped the weight ins at a national tournament and colleges "CAUGHT" him in a grocery store with a cart full of junk food!
Thanks!
