I wrestled in high school in late 1960s. We would wrestle in a very hot room with sweats on and lose 6 to 10 pounds in 2 days before matches. I would RESTRICT EATING for 2 days and then BINGE after matches-quite unhealthy but we did not know better or talk about it then (there were No NUTRITIONISTS or sports psychologists) to work with us of course, especially at the high school level. I would OBSESS on food like I never had while I was restricting eating.I was a good not great high school wrestler. After high school, I wrestled intramarually in college but never lost weight. I was at a good weight except for the last few years as I know have chronic pain and snack too much.
I just read article in NY times about dealing with food cravings as it clearly indicate that individuals who drastically reduce calories for a diet develop increased (markedly) food obsessions and cravings. Now, they use mindful techniques to deal with cravings, Obviously obesity is a major challenge in our society!
So I follow wrestling on the board but do NOT know what goes on with college wrestling now with weight control/losing weight. Are many college wrestlers losing quite a bit of weight to get to a lower weight class? Do they talk about dealing with obsessive eating/obsessions from weight loss/restrictive dieting? I am sure the top wrestlers do MUCH better than I did 50 some years ago as I started hating wrestling because of the weight loss/restrictive DIETING.
I remember a national article from several years ago. A college kid skipped the weight ins at a national tournament and colleges "CAUGHT" him in a grocery store with a cart full of junk food!
Thanks!

I add literally nothing to this thread other than a personal experience from HS. My dad would say I never cut a pound during the season but all I know is that after every season I’d put on 10 pounds and go up a weight class next year. If I ate four lunches during the season over four years I’d be surprised. Mom loved to cook, a very good cook and I ate what was available but not much more. One rare night after a weekend dual a few of us went out for a burger at a Big Boy restaurant. My buddy who wrestled 98 who could’ve cut to 92 if there was a class and our 174lber. I was a 132lber, starving and ordered a burger and fries and when the meal showed up I was so hungry for something salty I very generously added what I thought was salt, but was actually sugar. I tried eating the fries but they were ruined. I haven’t made That mistake since.

We used to take and drink a boss of soda and eat a bag of Doritos for after the match bus rides home from away matches.
Before the matches. Nothing. We used to roll guys up in the mats with their silks on to shed weight for a bit. State high wrestling room was brutally hot. Like a hot yoga room. Always remember coming out to get a drink of water and it felt like the basketball court was cold.

My sons wrestled, the older one from first grade all through high school. His younger brother started in K but decided he wanted to try something else once he hit 9th. He decided to try volleyball, well when he left on his first volleyball trip the bus first stopped at a c store for snacks, then at subway, both on the way to the game. He never wrestled again! Lol

I can’t think of any cravings from elementary school through high school wrestling…but I tell you what, if anyone ever offer me a rice cake I just may commit a felony on that person!
