Just sitting here thinking about the first team or player I ever saw do a “high five”. And the first players I ever saw a player “crossing himself” doing a Catholic prayer before taking a free throw. I would like to know what people would say to that. I’ll post my reply later. I want to see if my memory is embellishing something or was it real. I am not saying because I don’t want to suggest an answer. I will post my memories later.

Priest: “Does it help them to make the ‘sign of the cross’?”

McGuire: “Not if they can’t shoot.”

I remember in my youth the Basketball team was on television just about every Wednesday night during the regular season (67-69). The players of the Catholic faith seemed to always do it before every free throw. I do not recall other players from opposing teams ever doing that before free throws (ie those of the Catholic faith).

First person I remember doing it was Jack Thompson but the whole team did it. I think Standard did the first high five I remember but they all did that too.

It was earlier based on my recall. Memory not that good. I make the attribution to the first bunch. Thomas, Harlicka, Standard, etc. The first wave of the New York pipeline. But I know Roche did it.

In the latter case, John Roche. In the former case, I don't have a distinct recollection. In mentioning some of the players just ahead of the Roche group, did you not mean "Thompson", as in Jack Thompson? I remember him as a passing, dribbling machine, but I didn't remember him crossing himself, maybe because his group wasn't on TV nearly as much. The Roche group came in when I was a freshman at the university and attended all the games, plus they were on TV a lot.

First high five I ever say was from Francis "Skinny Legs" McGee, can't remember who the other player was.

I think you are right. Yes I mean Jack Thompson and you are right I think. He was a leader. Harlicka was the leading scorer and Standard was a problem around the basket. I watched a bunch of them too but I’m two thirds dumb it seems with memory. Lol
