Eugene Clinton had to play corner in that game (because of an injury) and was very nervous about it. He later told me (you really need to hear him tell it) that Smoot was in rare form that day and in pregame managed to piss off EVERYONE (players, coaches, trainers, cheerleaders, band and anyone else wearing orange and blue) on the Auburn sideline. Eugene was already nervous and said he begged Fred to shut up...........to absolutely no avail and the rest is history. Good times !
It was a fantastic performance, and it all started to come unraveled two weeks later in Baton Rouge. LSU exposed our defense and things were never the same again. The mystique of our defense was gone. Middle Tennessee State came to Starkville the next week and put up over 500 yards of offense using some the same concepts that Jimbo Fisher had used the week before - rolling the pocket, etc.Witnessed one of the best defensive performances ever by a State team against him in -- was that 2000?

Yep. I remember it was very hot and humid for the Florida game and then really cool and fall like for the Auburn game.we beat Florida the week before in Starkville, right?

We controlled our own destiny to win the West going into the 2nd last game of the season in 97, 98, and 00. In 99, we started 8-0 and then lost @ Alabama. Still a ridiculous run those 4 years.Yep, beat Florida (East Champs) and Auburn (West Champs) that year and it really wasn't close, the two teams that played for SEC championship. If we could have held on against Arkansas that year, we would have been in Atlanta... It was sleeting and cold.
Yep, & then followed up the bama loss with a loss in Little Rock against a not great Arkansas team - what could have been.We controlled our own destiny to win the West going into the 2nd last game of the season in 97, 98, and 00.
