RIP he changed the sport forever .
That he did. Of course, had it been swimmng there would be about five to seven different high jump events instead of one to accomodate all of the less efficient techniques.

I remember how this revolutionized high jumping. But it wouldn’t have been as successful if sawdust pits were still used.

I had heard about his new technique in 1968, but to see him execute the move at the 1968 Olympics (I was watching on TV), was stunning. It's not often that one individual totally revolutionizes a field event.
