Long way to go, but I could see a 2-seed for this team. We’ll know a lot more in a month, but just from what I’ve seen so far this looks like the best team we’ve had since those early 2000s teams.
I know Stansbury catches a lot of grief for never making the 2nd weekend. And some of it is deserved. But dang did we get some really bad draws. Butler the first year they got really good, the hottest team in the country in Xavier who was nailing 30-foot shots. And some guy in a braided belt injured Winsome Frazier & we dropped to a 9-seed because he missed a month & drew a 2nd round match at #1 Duke.
The 2002 draw as a 3 seed in Dallas with 6th seeded Texas was tough as well.
We got everything we wanted in 2003 with Butler in Birmingham.
But that Xavier game in Orlando 2004 still haunts me.
The one seeds that year:
A very overrated St. Joseph's was the overall No. 1 (lost in Elite 8)
SEC runner up Kentucky (we were the champion) (lost in second round)
Duke (won region)
Stanford (lost in second round)
We were the 2 seed in Duke's bracket. We crushed Monmouth and 7 seed Xavier pulled away from 10 seed Louisville late. That Sunday afternoon, Xavier hit everything from 25 foot out, including a half court prayer right before halftime. They went on to lose to Duke in the Elite 8.
The national championship was a 2 seed Connecticut against a 3 seed Georgia Tech. To this day, I believe two things about Mississippi State basketball. If we beat Xavier that Sunday afternoon in Orlando, we are in the Final Four as the highest rated team, and that in 1996 at the Meadowlands, Marcus Bullard was on the take.
