If there had been NIL when Freeze was at Ole Miss would he have got into trouble the first time?

I just don't understand why these coaches continue to get recycled time and time again - As they become unwanted at one school they are wanted at another.

They will be very successful. Great hire for them. The SEC gets stronger (kinda sucks)....but they're back to SEC coaches. Should be a lesson to all programs about taking Pac 12/West coast coaches. It's different here.

I agree. But, that's OK. I sense now an excitement at South Carolina that reminds me of how things were under Spurrier in the 2010-2013 period. I believe we will be very well-equipped to be a force in the SEC.

Read a good article about this hire yesterday. If not for the fact that he beat Saban 2 years in a row, Freeze would not be on anyone's radar. He barely even had a winning conference record, or it might have been losing conference record. And that was with cheating out of his mind.

I went to look up the win totals on wiki, but there were a lot of zeroes for vacated wins.

His overall record may not look great, but neither would a coach who took over a winless program, went 1-11 his first year and then 11-1 his second year. (His record would be .500)

I know, extreme example, but the notion that early bad years can offset the later good years in overall record is there.

He did get Ole miss up to a top ten team at the end of one season before the wheels fell off and the program with the scandal.

NIL took away Auburn's only advantage, cheating and paying recruits. Freeze is a decent coach but he isn't anything special. He was 37-25 at Ole Miss, like I said, decent but not special. He went from 10 wins in 2015 to 5 wins in 2016. The way he and Ole Miss lied to recruits about the NCAA investigation says all you need to know about what kind of person he is. Freeze is a liar and a cheat, he and Auburn are a perfect match.

He might be a 7 or 8 win coach year in/year out at Auburn.

I pulled up their records on ESPN. Ole Miss was 2-10 in 2011. In his first year in 2012 they went 7-6 (3-5), so a pretty good turnaround (comparable to what Beamer did here). 2013 was 8-5 (3-5). 2014 was 9-4 (5-3). They peaked in 2015 with 10-3 (6-2). Then the bottom fell out in 2016 as they went 5-7 (2-6).

It's that last year that stands out. Once all the cheating caught up with him, the bottom fell out. But, any article you read about Freeze's ability as a head coach give as Exhibit A, the fact that they beat Saban (not just Bama...Saban) in back-to-back seasons.

For me there just isn't enough there. Some of our fans were absolutely clamoring for him when Muschamp was fired and I simply didn't get all the fuss.

I can ALMOST write off that last year with the scandal, almost.

Other than hookers, his whole issue was paying players, which is legal now. Keeping it in his pants will be his big hurdle.

But you're right, you have to ignore the last year in order to argue his upward trend.

I guess it begs the question, now that EVERYONE can pay players, does that take away his biggest advantage? Or does that open it up more for him since he can do it freely?

Maybe he'll work out great there. I don't really have a dog in the fight since we rarely play Auburn and they aren't in our division. I just wasn't willing for us to risk it. If he'd gone double-digit win seasons his whole time there, that'd be a different story.

Your first question is a huge one. Teamsbthat have been known to be cheaters, are they losing their advantage, or is their advantage now just legal and open for everyone to see?

But agree, he'd be a risk, and a risk with baggage.

I believe that Freeze is a good offensive coach. That is what I like about him. And that is important in today's college football.

Probably wouldn't have gotten fired until he started blaming the former coach. Not sure what all the charges were...so not sure whether any would have gotten him in trouble the first time.

You touched on something there. Offense. With today's game, you need to score more now then in the past. Offenses need to be aggressive.

One thing I would add. Yes he made mistakes at Ole Miss. Something I learned back in the day when I hired people: don't be afraid to hire people who screwed up in a previous job. Those hires will go to extra lengths to not make the same mistakes again, and thus become excellent employees. I found that to be the case, in my experience.

Especially when they suffer the consequences of those mistakes.

As far as his transgressions go, his wife has forgiven him, so it doesn't really matter what anyone on the outside thinks.

I just have to wonder if he would have won without cheating.

Well, he has won around 70% of his games at 3 different schools, other than Ole Miss, including at Liberty AFTER his Ole Miss mistakes. I could be wrong because I know little and claim less. But, I've a hunch that Freeze knows a thing or two about "X's and O's"

All I really care about, though, is how he did in the SEC.

I've never said he's not a good coach. I just don't know if he can do it in the SEC without cheating. Maybe he can.

One thought though. He can openly buy players now, so he doesn't have to cheat.

I will say this about Auburn: they are not scared to hire someone with baggage. They hired Bruce Pearl. I suspect there is no one there who regrets that hire.

This article sums up Freeze's past misdeeds pretty well. Most forget that the calls made to the escort services only came to light because he wouldn't apologize to Nutt for blaming the NCAA infractions completely on him. If he had apologized, those calls likely never would have seen the light of day and he would have never been fired. But, as the article notes, all that anyone cares about is that he wins some games.

One pretty brutal excerpt:

"Freeze knew the program couldn’t risk his players, recruits or their families from knowing the truth of what was coming.

So Ole Miss chose to deceive them.

The athletic department orchestrated a massive misinformation campaign by repeatedly supplying the media with off-the-record lies about what was at the heart of the NCAA case.

The school kept telling anyone with a keyboard or a microphone that most of the major violations occurred under former coach Houston Nutt, not Freeze. As such, the story went, the Rebels would be able to avoid significant sanctions.

This was not true, though. The vast majority of the violations came under Freeze, not Nutt. Freeze knew the truth. So did Ole Miss.

Still, the plan went forward. Part of it was in the media, and part of it was Freeze reportedly lying directly to players and recruits and families who asked him about it. He stared right into their eyes and told them the lie.

The goal was obvious: trick everyone who believed in Hugh Freeze, who trusted Hugh Freeze, who gave their blood, sweat and tears to Hugh Freeze until, when the truth came out later via the NCAA infractions report, it was either too late or too difficult for them to transfer.

Remember, this was before the NCAA had its more forgiving transfer portal program.

This was about trapping them.

It’s a brutal and cutthroat thing to do to your own players and their parents, but hey, that’s the choice Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss made.

It certainly worked. By the time the NCAA report became public, signing day had come and gone. A lot of guys were stuck. Players who sought transfers were then hit with significant restrictions preventing where they could go. (Ole Miss eventually relented under immense media pressure). The hurt feelings lingered.

That's right...8 wins per year in a league where you will play Alabama, LSU, A&M, Ole Miss w/ Kiffin every year....if he's an 8 win coach most of the time he's done a d#mn good job.
Nothing special? He beat Saban twice during Saban's prime run.... I don't give a crap if he had half an NFL team sneaking in and playing in powder blues....it's impressive.

It is strange

I agree when it's recycling failed coaches. Or at least when their failure is on the field.

Freeze was succeeding on the field,, his failures were off the field. And with buying players now legal, he only needs to stay away from the women.

An interesting aside about Freeze is that he and Houston Nutt had cameos in the movie, "The Blind Side", sharing a scene together.
