watching the CSS replay of 2005 Bama vs. Tennessee, with commentary from Alabama TV network. Some quotes re Mike Shula:

"An outstanding young up and comer"
"A chip off the old block"
"The sole reason for Alabama being where they are right now"

Wow, that panned out.

It had been taped a year earlier and when they asked him about the state of Alabama football, he went on and on about what a great young coach Shula was and how the future looked as bright as it had in a long time. Of course, you've got to cut him some slack. He was probably drunk when he said that.

Edited to add: It was actually a good program and I like Stabler. I got a kick out of him talking about the culture shock when he left Alabama, where he was scared shitless of Bear, to Oakland, where the only team rule was show up at the stadium ready to perform at 1:00 Sunday.

last year in S'ville. Saw him walkin' around the stadium well before the game & went up to talk to him. Normally wouldn't do that (w/o the influence of alcohol), but he was my favorite NFL player back in the day. Speaking of UAT celebs, (under the influence) I embarassed my UAT office mate back in 94 when we saw Doug Layton in his big white Caddy watching TV before our game (& smokin' a big ceegar). I went up & asked him if he was Doug Layton & promptly shoved my office mate up to talk to him (he was big Layton fan).
