For the first time in my life, I’m just not excited for the season to start. Not sure why. Maybe personal issues, maybe the free-for-all state of the game. Just not into it. I’ll watch and hope they win. Will probably end up letting my tix go next year.

I’m not so into it anymore either, not like years ago. “College” football sucks now. Too much money, too little college, too much bullsh|t. Maybe it’s also because I’m older. Been there, done that, a lot. And, I still haven’t gotten over how Joe was treated at the end. PSU, the ncaa, the media. F*ck it.

Also, this year’s team doesn’t excite me. I expect 2023 all over again, perhaps even a drop off.

Years ago, I couldn’t wait for the season to start. The week of the ‘99 opener against arizona, I couldn’t wait for kickoff. Many coworkers at the time were into college football, so we talked trash all week. Then there was the hype for that PSU team (😞). It was a beautiful day that Saturday, and I enjoyed an A$$. BEATING. o_O with other alums at one of their homes. Great day. Now, “college” football is just a sh|t pile. 😞

And smoking your meat for 6 hours before kickoff has lost its luster as well!

I honestly have to admit, the moment that USC essentially stole Jordan Addison from Pitt, I knew it was over for college football.

I truly get that. It's difficult to admit my lack of passion but the 12 team playoff, the NIL free for all, the transfer super highway has stripped it all from me. Seems not long ago when I lived out west that a gang of us would go back for one game a year. Always had someone in the gang that was from out west and remember well seeing the awe on their faces at the autumn splendor, the crowd, the noise, the campus, the bars.......you get it. It's gone. One of my old roommates (we're class of 1970) had a source for good seats at WVU. We thought it over and declined. That used to be one place where I love to travel for a WVU/PSU game. I went to all of them until 1981 when I moved to Colorado. Can hardly believe my lack of interest in going this year

Same here. Used to get excited on game week, but now, meh... I'll watch the game, but because of high prices and such, the celebrations will be toned way down. I think the biggest issue is the transfer portal. It used to be you had a bunch of kids that come in as freshmen and played together for four or five years. You recognized the familiar faces, the names each year and you knew what type of team was coming back. Now, you need a scorecard literally each week because kids move in and out of programs like BobPSU92 going through a box of warm, soft scones and you have no idea who is playing each week without looking up a new number and a new name.

One of the reasons I always liked college sports and Football in particular was the stability. The school was always there and the players were loyal to the school unlike the pros. MLB has the same guys in the playoffs every year but just on different teams. That has changed in college now too.

A very old timer here, but I am still reasonably excited for the return of college football. I'll even admit that I get a bit of a thrill seeing practice videos. I am usually an optimist in the "off season" then turn to a doom-and-gloom pessimist a few days before the opening kickoff.

While the whole NIL and transfer portal stuff is certainly a buzz kill, for me the genjuine thrill of the new season started to wane with the rise of the recruiting service star system.

In the "old days," all I ever had to base the roister on were the Parade and Scholastic Coach magazines list of HS All Americans. Then around the mid-70's or so (memory issue on the actual years), I got Joe Terranova's recruiting pamphlet which was a predecessor of the star system now in vogue.

In some years, Penn State actually had the #1 class, while in some years the Lions' class was ranked somewhere in the top 12 or so. But there was no agonizing over a 5-star kid who picked a rival school over PSU. What I didn't know didn't impact my mood. But I always had faith in Joe to produce a hard-nosed, physical squad that could in most years compete with anyone on the schedule.

Recently, there seem to be more misses on the super blue chippers than hits. while our annual foes (mainly OSU, of course) reap more talent than Penn State. And, right or wrong, I don't have the faith in James Franklin as a HC that he can mold a top-12 class into a top-5 product.

Yet, come Saturday at 11:00 (Texas time), I'll be pacing the floor happy as pie to see the generic vanilla uniforms enter the field.

What can I say? I'm a sad case.

GO STATE! BEAT MOUNTAINEERS!

Oddly enough I still like and root for PSU to win....and I'm pretty pumped for this year. Although I'm not sure if this game counts since it's not tOSU....but I'm not sure how those mental gymnastics work anymore. I guess it counts if PSU loses? Oh well...hopefully they win by 10+, show some signs of life in the passing game and get out of Mo-town healthy. For those that still like PSU and college football...hopefully this year is a good one.

Same…last year for season tickets……never again will I pay for a non-playoff bowl game…maybe go to New Orleans to check box of all major bowl venues…I will return fir a single game if PSU ever honors Joe properly…thinking I might stop following what’s left of college football…like FairG, it is time to move in to other things in life…

Kind of a bummer of a thread so far but I'm pumped. We have some awesome home games this year. Get to see new teams to play against. Offensive potential. See how much Drew Allar has grown (and hopefully becomes more risky).

Fun year up ahead. Drew in year 2. 2 headed monster behind him. Pretty big OL that all have played a decent amount of football. Good TE room. Hired one of the hottest OC's around....Tom Allen running a defense that is pretty talented. DT's all came back as a group for the most part, Carter to DE...Rojas and Winston. As I get older I feel for those folks who have soured on the game itself(some legit gripes) or the school or HC. I see the basic blues or all whites out there and I'm pretty pumped. Wva, Kent St, or tOSU....just always enjoyed it.

I’m more curious than excited. Here are a few reasons why..,

1) Tom Allen’s defense against an experienced WVU offense. Manny was a blitzer. What does Bucky Tooth do?🤷🏼‍♂️

2) What changes does Kotelnicki insert into the offense especially in the passing game.

3) WR play…especially Fleming

4) Franklin’s willingness and Trautwein’s ability to assemble a running game that isn’t necessarily sexy with 15+ yard “impact” runs, but can consistently move the chains with 3-5 yd runs.

5) FG kicking

Carter at DE is going to be exciting to watch. He certainly has the speed to wreak havoc (as long as he stays on field). Hopefully there a couple freshman that can can infuse WR group a bit in addition to a better scheme.

Sort of curious to see if Carter is punished at for his summer transgressions.

Ummm, this doesn't get me hyped. Poor choice of song as it is kind of mellow.

I am excited for football season to get under way. I am excited to watch the game on Saturday. However, I am not getting my hopes up with the new OC and DC and same head coach because I feel like we go thru the same thing every time we have a new OC and DC. We have a great set of RBs but the OL blocking schemes never seem to open a definitive whole for big yardage many times. It still seems sort of generic which makes it easy for opponents to defend. I hope I am wrong this year. I think we have the talent to be really good but I question overall game plans/strategies/plays(routes, blocking schemes, formations, etc). We never seem to be able to adjust when needed and overall play is sloppy with penalties, poor tackling, blown coverages, blown blocks. Granted not all coaching but coaching needs to put players in positions to be successful and not try to shoe horn players into a system hoping it will work like it did almost 10 years ago. I hope we see a new fascinating mistake free offense that is very productive that lets the defense rest with long drives so the defense can tee off on opponents. I hope we are wow'd on Saturday. We should dominate WVU from the start.

I'm optimistic (then again, every season starts this way). I think there's a chance for 11-1 and a playoff appearance. My main concern is again OL play and offensive schemes. Singleton and Allen didn't light it up much last year. Hopefully the new OC gets this sorted out quick. I think our D can keep us in any game.

Had some prognostication success last year with picking scores so we'll try it again this season. So many question marks on the offensive side of the ball with a new OC and new WRs. Let's hope that the adage Coach K has been talking about getting the playmakers the ball means that we'll see Singleton more in the flat and in space. Defensively, keep Greene in the pocket and don't let him freelance on the run. I think PSU's front 7 is just as stout against the run as last year. Can the new transfers at CB make immediate splashes in the passing game? I loved what I saw out of Harris in the B/W game and would love to see that translate against real opponents. Thankfully this is a noon start so the hillbillies won't be too liquored up. I see it as a 31-19 PSU win and they pass the sneaky tough first early test.
