Do college fans really care whether players go to class?

UConn head coach Geno Auriemma says it's time to "stop the charade of student-athlete." "Let's make it a business."

At what point do we just drop the collegiate athletics model? Let them be professional athletes at the minor league level for their sport.

If it becomes truly “professional” how can they be legally capped at 4 years of eligibility?

He's right about the charade part, and it's been that way for a long time. Of course, he's part of the problem.

Why should they be limited to 4 or 5 years? Why do colleges spend hundreds of millions a year to train athletes for the NFL, NBA and MLB?

If they can earn more money playing for a college team than they can elsewhere and they want to keep playing… then I say play on.

Interesting to hear him take this approach considering the bitching he did earlier this year about how difficult it is to “coach” in modern day.

I already assumed high profile athletes didn't go to class.

Unlike most big time programs, we actually report minor cheating and self impose harsh penalties.

I’m on an amateur train myself. Coaches always say what’s in their best interest, no one else’s.

I don't think a women's basketball coach really wants to make it a business. This was by far the most successful WNBA season ever in terms of attendance and viewership and revenue. The league still lost $40,000,000 and is looking at a lockout if the players demand more money.

"Student athlete" ended years ago. Joe Lee Dunn told me State was the only college he coached at that made his players go to class.

Bingo. Dude has no clue. If women's college basketball was a business. About 2-4 schools would be in business. Maybe.

I don’t know why I never liked the guy, but I respect him as a coach and agree with everything he just said.
