Can anyone name a great player who became a great coach? I am having a hard time coming up with one. Football, basketball, hockey or baseball…college or pro.

Larry Bird came closer than most. Russell won two championships. Who else? Wilkins.

Norm Van Brocklin - NFL
Pat Riley - NBA
K.C. Jones - NBA
Lenny Wilkens - NBA
Luke Appling - MLB

There may be some in the NHL -- I didn't put any thought into your question with regard to that sport.

Jerry Sloan wasn't bad but maybe not great

Bob Cousy wasn't too bad as a college coach but, in the NBA, not so much

Van Brocklin lost more than he won. But I think he did coach with a pack of cigs in his shirt pocket so that counts for something. Appling only coached 40 games and lost most of them.
Yes for the others.

hmm, I was going from memory, and thought Van Brocklin had more success. In his defense, his 1st job was with the expansion Minnesota Vikings, and his 2nd job he took over as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons after their head coach was fired after losing the 1st three games of the season. But the point remains, my memory was faulty, and I should not have included him.

Appling is another one where my memory was faulty. I thought he had a good bit of success as a manager. He did, but that was in the minor leagues. As you mentioned (and I didn't realize/forgot), he had a poor record in his only time as a MLB head manager. Another one I shouldn't have included in my list.

St John’s cans their HC… apparently going after Pitino. Syracuse, St John’s and GTown all to have new coaches…remember the 80’s, 3 of the best teams in the country. The Big East was something else, wars every night

You are right that it seems like a short list. The one I can think of is Joe Torre. As a player, 252 HRs and a .297 career average. He was a little before my time and I knew he was good but did not realize he was that good; those are really good numbers for a guy who was primarily a catcher. And of course he was a HOF manager with the Yankees.

I'd offer Tom Heinsohn.

I considered him, but I hated him when he played for the Celtics, and I hated him when he coached the Celtics. I usually try to be objective, but as a life-long Sixers fan, I don't know if that was possible in this case. ;)

Heinsohn wasn't my favorite either, but growing up in Pittsburgh makes it easier to be objective when it come to anything basketball.

Most former tennis players make good coaches - even ones who weren’t super successful (Brad Gilbert stands out). Then you have guys like Lendl, Becker, and Ivanisovic.
