it would be nice if cohen could bring some of his signees from UK down here, but there is that whole question of getting out of a LOI. if there is a change in head coach since the time you signed, aren't you allowed out of it without any penalty?

he signed with Bob Huggins at KSU. Huggins left for WVU, and Beasley wanted to go with him.

Beasley played for KSU this past year. You sign your LOI with the school, not the coach. Even though most players sign because of the coach more than the school, they won't let you out of your LOI.

I don't think baseball is any different.

Beasley actually didnt ask to be let out of his LOI. it is commonly believed that Beasley stayed with KSU because assistant coach Dalonte Hill, who brought Beasley to KSU, decided to stay in Manhatten.
a side note, Hill is now the highest paid assistant coach in the country, he just inked a deal worth 420K/year.
the only reason why Beasley went to KSU in the fist place is because Hill was there. before KSU, Hill coached at UNC-Charlotte...and Beasley was committed to them while Hill was an assistant.
basically, Beasley went where Hill was.

but as for getting out of LOIs, that happens all the time. hell, just this spring there have been tons of requests out of LOIs. and i cant think of a single one that has been denied.
some of the bigger releases have been:
#9 ranked Devin Ebanks from Indiana to WVU.
#23 J'Mison Morgan from LSU to UCLA.
#71 Emmanuel Negedu from Arizona to...undecided still.
Nick Williams from Marquette to Indiana.

pretty good article with even more players listed who signed and got out of their LOIs.

Beasley asked out of their letter of intent and they were both denied by the school. Beasley didnt make a big deal out of it but he did ask to get out and go to West Virginia.

Huggins resigned april 6th of last year.
april 10th, Martin is announced.

on april 11th, scout wrote this article:

Despite Bob Huggins' departure from Kansas State, the 6-foot-9 skilled forward said he's "115 percent" certain of where he wants to be.

i couldnt find anything from ESPN, SCOUT, or CBSSPORTSLINE saying that he had asked out of his LOI. thats what i based my comment on. if there is some article i cant find that says he asked out of his LOI and KSU denied it, post it up...cuz that would have been some big news.

here, but I would think any of the UK players that Cohen has recruited are going to have two options if they don't want to go since Cohen is gone- go JUCO or go pro assuming that they are drafted. I'm assuming that you are referring to Webb. I guess UK could let Webb out of his commitment, but since he is a pretty high draft pick, I doubt that they would do it, I don't know, stranger things have happened, but I'm not holding my breath on this one.

maybe here, that there was sort of a gentlemen's agreement that in turn for KY not playing hard ball with the buyout clause since Cohen was hired here before July 1, that Cohen wouldn't pursue any of the UK signees to sway them to follow him to MSU.

but the good thing is Webb's Dad has said on his own that he wants out. I'm pretty sure that Cohen hasn't tried to talk him in to coming here.

Of course, no one really knows what the terms of the deal actually were except for Cohen, Barnhart, and maybe Byrne.

as far as the buyout. cohen could have just sat around for a couple weeks unitl it expired, but think both sides wanted to get on with it. it probably wasn't much more than a gentleman's agreement about recruits or current players.

cohen doesn't seem like the kind of guy to try to sway his UK recruits, anyway. it just would be a plus to get webb, or anyone for that matter.

was that cohen would not bring his assistant coaches with him, so that they would stay at kentucky for continuity. but who knows.

but not in our case, obviously.

I do think that Henderson, UK's new coach, deserves a shot at the job. I was hoping that they wouldn't promote him, because I would have liked to have had him as a pitching coach.

In one of his earliest interviews after being hired, Cohen made the comment that he was still helping UK to try and keep some of their commitments/signees (I can't remember the term he used). I don't know if that was part of the deal or not. Also, I'm not sure how that pertains to LOI's and signees breaking or getting out of them. But I did hear him say something to that extent.
