I know GG reclassified in order to get to the NBA sooner due to new CBA rules for rooking contracts. Admittingly, I've never dug too much into it b/c it didn't matter...he's gone anyway. However, the fact that he hasn't made a comment on it one way or another is a little interesting. Why not go ahead and make a statement and get it over with since everyone is expecting it anyway? So it got me thinking. What exactly was the change in the rooking contract that he was trying to avoid? I haven't been able to find anything.

I think the changes are unknown, but expected to be less $ than what rookies can get now (disclaimer: I don't follow the NBA).

I'm sure his parents and coach Paris are talking to him "helping him make the best decision". Given his situation, I wouldn't have expected an announcement right away. You at least want to give the impression that you're mulling it over.

Who know, though? He admitted that he got a bit of a rude awakening coming to college ball, so maybe he'll think it's in his best interest to slow it down and stay another year in college for his development. Whatever the jump from high school to the SEC is, multiply that by 100 for jumping from the SEC to the NBA.

Looks like most mocks have him as the 17-22 pick. I don't know the NBA enough to know what the disparity between that and a top 5 pick would be.

Since the top 4 picks are the "lottery picks" and if he is not considered a "lottery pick". Maybe decides to come back for another year.

I can see it going either way. Either you get out now and get the money while you can because you never know what the future holds, or you think like a Peyton Manning, confident you’re gonna have a long NBA career so you realize that one year of salary is irrelevant in the long term.

Also, I don’t think GG’s family is exactly hurting for money. They’re not Manning wealthy I don’t believe, but I don’t think he was raised in poverty either.

I’m not sure what’s going to happen with the collective bargaining agreement next year, but I don’t think it’s going to amount to tens of millions of dollars less. I’m just not sure the difference in salary is going to be life altering one way or the other.

all that said, until I hear differently I assume he’s gone.

NBA rookie contract is a four-year deal for first-round picks with the team having an option to keep the player for years three and four.

Last year's draft (over 4 years):

1st Round 30th pick 11.2 million
1st Round 20th pick 14.1 million
1st Round 15th pick 18 million
1st Round 10th pick 21.8 million
1st Round 5th pick 32.9 million

Various Mock Drafts

nbcsports.com: Portland #13 (updated 2/14)
cbssports.com: Sacramento #14 (updated 2/13)
nbadraft.net: Portland #12 (updated 3/14)
bleacherreport.com: Utah #15 (updated 2/22)
USAtoday.com: Toronto #14 (updated 3/6)

If he goes this year, he will make close to 20 million over 4 years. Will see minimal time on an NBA court next year, and likely take 2-3 years before he sees any serious time. Also, would depend on what team he went to. Would be more beneficial for him to go to an established team where he could learn from others and be eased into everything.

If he stays, he is likely a lottery pick next year, making close to 30 over 4 years. GG, Meechie, Jacobi, and Gray will be improved, but we could really use a stud transfer or two to make any significant impact on a winning season next year. Tourney bid, even with him returning would be a little far fetched, but not impossible.

Most likely he is headed to the draft, but as some have said, he has not made a decision yet. This hesitancy leaves some doubt.

Collyn has said repeatedly that he won't be back.

Not doubting that at all. Just curious as to why it's not been announced yet. Everyone on the planet was expecting a 1 and done.
Good point. Hope he comes back. That would draw some talent.

Getting an education in the classroom can't hurt either.

Thanks for the numbers!!

with the CBA changing after this year 30 M for 4 years is a pipe dream. Length of rookie contracts is going to be extended and money will not significantly change. The big bucks in the second contract. That is the rush!

Haven’t watched a NBA game in at least 10 years. Haven’t watched very many SC basketball games during that span either. GG is good, and he may develop into a great player, but I’ve seen many who were much better at this stage. No sweat if/when he leaves.

It’s all academic. I know it’s unfair to judge at this point but from what I’ve seen thus far I’m not confident Paris can effectively handle this job.
