GG is playing very well and playing a good many minutes every game.

He's on a two way contract that only allows him to play 50 games on Memphis and he only recieves 50% of the league minimum.

I guess he's playing for a big future contract. Can two-way contacts be bought out or converted? If he continues to play every game, he is going to hit the 50 game max before the season is complete. What if they were a playoff team? He would have to sit during the playoffs or Memphis would have to manage his regular seasons game played to ensure his availability? Maybe playoffs don't count towards the 50 games?

Any NBA experts out there?

He's obviously a good player. Lamont Paris has proven to be a good coach. Not sure why it didn't seem to work between the 2 last year. I'm happy for both their successes this season.

He should have been a senior in HS when he played for us. I don't think he was mentally ready to be the leader of a SEC program, and we didn't have any other weapons. Personally, I think had he stayed in HS and came this year, he would look like a completely different player just based on the supporting crew he would have had around him.

Hard to tell if staying in HS would have resulted in more $$ long term. I think he's about to earn himself a big contract. If he stayed in school, had a successful year in college this year, would a 1st round pick outweigh what he's going to receive? I really don't know the answer to that question.

Either way, he'll be fine. Talent rules in the NBA.

If he'd stayed in college another year and played with the same skill and newfound maturity he's showing in the NBA, he'd be one of the top players in basketball this year and likely a top 5 pick, at the least. Not to mention, we'd be a top 15 or so team most likely.

But, if he continues to improve and stays healthy, he'll stand to make a ton of money long-term so it probably won't make much of a different over the whole of his career.

While it’s fun to think about GG on this team, the reality is that it never was going to be possible. What likely happened is that we used pretty much all of the NIL money we had to land GG Jackson last season. Paris didn’t have much of a chance recruiting his first season, so made sense. But as a result we had nobody around GG. Sure, Meechie was here but he was injured and inconsistent. And GG was young and undersized to dominate. But he wasn’t terrible…just no help.

With GG gone, we were able to spread out the NIL and bring in a number of solid, experienced players that have made all the difference. Cooper, Stute, Mack, etc…. It would’ve been awesome if GG could’ve stuck around with this team to see how good he could’ve been, but the reality is if GG was here, Cooper, Mack, Stute, etc probably aren’t. At least all of them aren’t. Not enough NIL for all of them. So while we would like to think about him on this team, it’s just wouldn’t have been possible unless we somehow doubled our NIL budget.

It obviously works better for us to spread out the $$. But understandable for us to dump it all on GG when we were already way behind in the recruiting process anyway.

Glad to see him do well. Sure, he fell in our lap as UNC wouldn’t bring him in early. But he still is a Gamecock.

Yes, Two-Way Contracts can be converted into an Active Roster Contract. However, the goal for GG is to just play and learn this year. Memphis has big plans for him and they need a solid Small Forward moving forward. That spot is wide open for him if he works hard and do what they tell him to. I started a thread on GG after he had a 23 point game on MLK Day. Only a couple posters had anything good to say. You know this board sometimes. If you don't do it in a Gamecock uniform, it didn't happen. With regard to him being drafted in the Second Round and his contract status, this will probably be a blessing in disguise for him. He will be a Free Agent next year and they are probably giving him a hefty bump in salary above the minimum to keep him around. Happens with NBA Second Rounders if they pan out. Austin Reaves, an undrafted Two-Way guy for the Lakers signed a 4 Year, 54 Million Dollar contract after putting on some good performances in the playoffs last year.

Great insight! Great info. I will always pull for GG but I think it was best for both parties that he moved on.

G.G. had his head up his @$$ last year and the team around him wasn't very good, either.

How much NIL money did we have?
