Furman's win over UTC was featured on several morning shows. It's been a long time coming but Furman is going to the dance. 40 years. I lived in Greenville back in the 60's and Furman played big time basketball. Joe ___, can't think of the name, was coaching. Respect Furman because their kids are real student-athletes in the true sense of the word. They have to meet tough admission requirements and go to class. You won't read about them taking guns to friends or street drag racing. Best of luck. Will there be other S. C. teams in the dance??

Joe Williams....Always thought he was cool...Led Jacksonville to Final game with Artis Gilmore,Pembook Burrows,Vaughn Wedeking and Rex Morgan...Incredible I remember this from 1970 and I can't remember what I did with my car keys last night.

Pretty sure one of those top notch Furman teams bounced our Cocks out of the dance in the early 70s.

I'd love to see Furman return to their football glory as well. They were a 1-AA power for 10-15 years.
You are correct, watched that game on TV in Preston dorm. They had a brute rebounder, Joe Brunson I think was his name.

Wow. You reached way back for that one. Impressive. Also Lefty was at Davidson in the 60's and put them on the bb map. I remember seeing some of the top players from the Carolinas in the textile tournament. Davidson had a big center who was quite a star.

I’m a Furman grad myself! I’m a Gamecock through and through thanks to going to Carolina games since I was 10. But I was at Furman from 89-93. My first year at Furman, the football team lost in the semifinals with about 6 inches of snow on the field in Greenville. Awesome day. And I was at Memorial Auditorium when Furman basketball upset a top 20 ETSU. Glad to see the team playing well the last few years. Hope they get a couple of upsets in the tourney.

Saw Furman play many times at Greenville Memorial when Joe Williams coached. I was there the night they almost beat #3 DePaul.

Davidson's center was Mike Malloy.....I think Lefty had them ranked in the top 3 at one time.

Furman had Fessor (Moose) Leonard a 7footer and Clyde Mayes who was a great player....
Later on when they beat Carolina they had Bruce Grimm a lefty guard from Indiana..
Like I said I'm at the age where I can remember the old stuff ,just can't remember yesterday.

I remember those years. Don't forget they had Al Daniel and Jonathan Moore in the late 70's

Don't forget Mel Daniel, his younger brother and I believe as a Frosh he iced the game with FT's to oust UNC ... Mel is a friend and a wonderful individual ... he led the SoCon in scoring in 1981 and Furman in scoring in 1982. A 3-time first team All-Conference player and a two time honorable mention for All-American. Drafted by the NJ Nets in the '82 draft ...

Clyde "The Glide" Mayes. A fellow Wade Hampton High grad. Bruce Grimm was great. So were the Moore brothers. Shout out to my old buddy Artie Knight who played PG for Furman in the 70's.
