...but that's what happens when every other 2-year college in the state is a community college-- Jones gets that label too even if it has marketed itself in the past (and maybe still does) as Mississippi's Junior College.

That is the prefered title......they dropped the County about five years ago and refused to take the Community College level

And yes, on short reference it still goes by JCJC

Meaning, sometimes you can want the county (JCJC) and sometimes you can not want it (Jones Junior College)

Sun Herald will get yelled at this, trust me --- Jones takes this crap seriously

...even though there is a preferred name and, of course, an alliterative acronym.

When I think of Hinds, Jones, Holmes, Itawamba, etc., I never have ever had the thought cross my mind- "Oh, that's a community college, it's not as good as the place that calls itself a junior college."

They're all the same in my book. I probably would get just as good an education at Hinds, Itawamba, Pearl River, etc. as I would at Jones.

...as far as quality of instruction is concerned, you're right in that most community colleges offer as good an instruction as does Jones and vice versa.

Jones also has had the reputation among community college people for treating its faculty and staff very well, and a lot of that comes from the fact that unlike most other community colleges in the state they don't have a lot of expenses as far as building upkeep is concerned. Everything is on one campus, and because of that JCJC has long sold itself to high school students and their parents in its area as a place to have a college experience.

Nobody likes to be called by the wrong name. But you're right that you'd probably get about the same education at any of the other larger JUCOs in the state.

The school dropped County from its title eight years ago

The school sent out a release saying it felt like it was limiting itself by saying "Jones County Junior College"

Then two years ago, the word County was officially re-added to the title

So it is now officially Jones County Junior College or on short reference, JCJC

Dr. Waldrup (the No 2 man behind Dr. Whitehead for a long time) was the real stickler....he would call and chew your *** out if you made a mistake
