Tonight, for many, marks the 12th and final night of the Christmas Season. In recent years the Gambits have had a festive 12th Night Party in which my wife and I dress up as King and Queen and enjoy much merriment with our Royal Subjects. Sadly, due to the accursed Coronavirus, we did not hold this mirthful event last year and now, yet again, our plans have been dashed. Herein fear not! Happier days are ahead. This year's party is merely delayed. We intend to have it in July, if necessary. This damnable virus will not prevail over the spirit of Christmas!

As an aside, the Gambit tree still glows like a thousand fires and will remain so until at least Candlemas Day (The Feast of the Presentation) on February 2nd. In Tudor England, this date marked the traditional end of the Christmas Season, but the Victorians changed that. The Gambits will defer to the Tudors.

I will also note that tomorrow is Orthodox Christmas Eve, Friday being Orthodox Christmas. I have mentioned many times here that, as a child growing up, my family always celebrated Christmas twice since my Mom was Orthodox and my Dad was Byzantine Catholic. What joyful days those were!

I wish all of you a Happy 12th Night and, to my Orthodox Brothers and Sisters, I wish you a Merry Christmas! God bless us, every one.

Get dressed up tonight, break out the clogs, and you can count on the bwi clan joining you in a socially distanced keggar.

I love learning from this board. Fairgambit, Let me say Merry Christmas. Now, when you were little did you celebrate Santa coming during the Orthodox Christmas too?

Good question Mr. Potter. Santa only came once, on December 25th. My Mom said Santa had this big list and when he dropped off my gifts he put a checkmark next to my name. Even though we celebrated twice, he knew I had already received my gifts and he would not stop again. However, both of my parents came from large families so I had many aunts and uncles and on the 25th I got present from my Dad's family and on January 7th from my Mom's side. That was a lot of gifts!

Counselor, can you define “our Royal Subjects” for the court?

Depending on the meaning, I am not sure that you need to invite 3rd parties to enjoy much merriment.

It’s good to be the king.

Always good to mix excess alcohol with religious celebrations. It makes the Bible easier to understand, especially the turning water into wine part.

I've been in this church Glov, and St. Mary's around the corner, and Holy Ghost on Helen Street. I spent the 1st year of my life living on Gardner Street in the Bottoms and had 2 aunts that lived there until they died in the 70's and 80's.

We're related then!

You both know my existence on this earth....to understand, learn and appreciate the magnificent structures engineered and built by the many geniuses before the 20th century.
When I was about 12 years old I had dreams of being an engineer. I wanted to design bridges. I spent hours looking at pictures of the Golden Gate, Brooklyn, The Forth Bridge in the UK...even the McKees Rocks Bridge. I don't know why my dreams changed. Perhaps because I hated math. In any event, I turned to the law but my fascination with bridges remains to this day.
The McKees Rocks Bridge.
