at the watering hole Bonnie raitt version came on. I was talking to a younger friend, I said you know a DT for the Bengals wrote this song. He was like HUH?? I said sure, all American DT at PSU, first round pick of the Bengals Mike Reid. I get like he played for the Bengals? DT? Yes. No way he says. so we looked it up. He was impressed. All American, and a Grammy award winner plus on and on.

He may be my favorite Penn State player of all time. He defined success with honor, perhaps along with John Urshel. But I remember Reid as a great wrestler too, as well as a pianist. Who does that? And he was so dominant on the football field.

Great thread here. "Obviously" Mike Reid is my favorite Penn State player.

In addition to his dominance on the gridiron and his prowess on the piano, Reid took a role in a play during his red-shirt (knee injury which forced him to miss the e tire 1967 season)year.

And if my aging memory still functions correctly, I think Mike kicked a FG for PA in a loss to the Texas team in the Big 33 in 1965.

What an amazing set of talents in one person: All American DT, Grammy-winning writer, concert pianist, gifted musical performer, record-setting linebacker, solid place kicker, and among the better leaders to ever wear the blue and white.

I am 67 and I saw Mike Reid play when I was a kid. He was the most dominant Penn State player I saw play.

Arrington, Poz, Millen, Onkotz, and others were great, but Mike Reid was different. He had leadership qualities, he dominated the line of scrimmage, and he led teams that were undefeated.

It was a different game back then, I will give you that. But Reid’s strength and quickness and his determination would allow him to be a dominant player even now.

I have no problem rating him the finest football player we have ever had. He tops the list.

Reid dominated the line of scrimmage like no other Penn State defensive lineman since and that is not to take anything away from the likes of Millen, Clark, Courtney Brown or Hali. They and others were great players, but Reid was the GOAT: the only Penn State player to win the Outland Trophy. He also won the Maxwell Award and is in the CFB HoF.

Agree on Mike Reid and Urschel but keep in mind there are hundred maybe thousands of former players who are leaders in their fields now after playing at PSU. Jesse Arielle, Rosetta Grier, Franco, Lydell are just the well-known after football success stories but there are hundreds (more than 409) of truly great people in society who have played football at PSU - the real accomplishment that should be celebrated.

Reid played the part of Big Julie in a campus production of "Guys and Dolls."
