Clay Homan beat his own player in a playoff to win the state am on Sunday. I love that he still has a desire to compete, and he's out there showing them how it's done. I'm guessing Cohen and Mullen would give a right nut to still be playing competitively.<div>

by sinking about a 25 foot birdie putt. I birdied the last 3 out of 5 holes to win. It was the summer after my senior year. It was my home course, so I had an advantage, but I will never forget that day as long as I live.

I can't decide what I think about this. Awesome that he can still compete. He obviously knows what he is coaching. But could also respect him for caddying/coaching/cheering for his players as they play in these summer events. <div>
</div><div>Again, not saying its wrong, I see both sides of it. I cant even decide how I feel about it.</div><div>

actually how to swing a club... It seems like it may be the one sport that a 40 year old guy can get out there on the field and show the athletes how it's done better than telling them.<div>
</div><div>Never thought about it before, but maybe they actually learn more that way.</div>

given that he is our golf coach, I would much rather see his team winning some tournaments and finishing somewhere outside the bottom three of the SEC rather than him winning tournaments. Hope his recruiting is not suffering due to him putting in too much time on his own game.

Not some guy who "used to be a good golfer". I have no problem with it, he just needs to get better players to MSU. It's tough to compete with some of the other schools in the SEC for golfers...

state Amateur, so it should be a good venue to recruit and network as well.

the top junior golfers in the state are definitely at the am but that's not saying much. Mississippi amateur golf is kind of a joke. There are about 10 players in the state who have a legit shot to win the am every year.

Clay signed the best junior in MS last year and for this incoming year as well, but recruiting in golf is pretty much the same battle you fight in football. You have to get the best players in your state every year as well as a stud or two from you neighboring states to compete against Bama, UGA, and Fla. And Mississippi has a tendency to skip a few years here and there when it comes to great junior golfers

I figured the coach of our college team would be credited as a professional?

have to somewhat disagree with you that all of the state's best juniors were at thestate am. Several of the states best juniors were at other national junior tournaments. Most D1 college golf programs already have 2012 class full and working on 13 and 14. Have you heard rumor that A Rowland and three others from team were dismissed after spring semester?

Tiger Woods is a professional golfer worth millions of dollars who is paid to do one thing and do it perfectly. He pays a professional swing coach six figures out of his winnings.<div>
</div><div>I don't think you can realistically compare what Clay Homan has at his disposal to Tiger Woods' situation.</div><div>
</div><div>He has a TEAM to coach. College golf is not just one guy going out on his own every day. Clay has to try to make them all better, and all work together, all at once.</div><div>He has a small budget -- I'm guessing it doesn't include six figures for a swing coach, so you do what you can do with what you have.</div><div>He has limited time to officially recruit and then coach his own players -- I am guessing playing a round with one in a tournament doesn't count toward that, but I bet if you asked the player he learned something that day.</div><div>
</div><div>I'm sure ideally Clay would love to have each player on his team an individual swing coach who lives with the player 24/7, but that's not even close to what we're talking about here.</div><div>
