They shouldn't even be at .500 now, much less staying close to The Cubs. They have a vagabond group of players. If they can limp into the break still in it, I think they've got a shot (at the wildcard). The Cubs may be for real this year ,however.

He'll be out 8 weeks at the absolute most. Glaus is showing more power lately, Ankiel has homered in back-to-back nights, and Ludwick should be an All-Star.

If Pujols is out for 8 weeks, they will be at least 10 games out when he gets back. I don't think the three guys you mentioned can carry a ball club for 8 weeks. Ankiel is headed for the .240's and while Ludwick may be having an All-Star first half, he'll be looking .260 in the eyes when the season winds down. The Cardinals will be lucky to be at .500 come October.

How can you be a Cub fan with that? :)
Aren't you superstitious?
Karma hits the Cubs HARRRRRRRD.
I've been wanting to buy a Fukudome Jersey. But I KNOW he'll get splattered in a train wreck the moment I put cash on it. (O.K., Maybe that was Polk-esque over-reactionary)
Forgive me while I feed The Goat...

Pretty bold predictions. I'll be surprised if any of those are correct.

Ludwick had seen his BA plummet 45 points in the couple of weeks prior to this mini-streak he's put together against the hapless Reds. Ankiel is a great story, but at the end of the day, he's a very average major league hitter. And if you look at the Cardinals position by position, they are an average major league team. The law of averages ALWAYS catches up with you over 162 games.

Ludwick has cooled off lately, save the last two days. But he's still hitting .321.

I didn't say anything about Ankiel being a great hitter. I just pointed out that he's homered in his first two games back from the infection in his knee and could be warming up. He doesn't have to stay hot the rest of the season, but it would help if he does well over the next few weeks. His arm in center is a weapon on it's own. Ask the Rockies.

This might not be a team loaded with All-Star talent, but it's enough to win and make the playoffs. People can say they're just playing over their heads right now, that's fine. These guys feed off of that. But I'll be shocked if they slip below .500 at season's end. At least wait until they hit some kind of slump before you try to write them off as a team that's going to choke.

They are an average offensive team that is playing a little over their head at the moment but they certainly arent terrible. They are a good fielding team with a very good defensive outfield. Shumacher and Ankiel have speed and quickness and both have cannons for arms and Ludwick is no slouch. Izturis is a definite upgrade over Eckstein at SS.

after saying they would finish 4th in the central at best. They dont have a team of all-stars but they are a good baseball team that does all the little things well that it takes to win. Their pitchers keep them in games, the defense makes all the plays they are supposed to make and several that they arent. They can win on the road. And the hitters take professional AB's They work the count, they dont do like the reds done two nights ago where Mitchell Boggs walked 2 straight and Brandon Phillips comes up first pitch swinging and pops a lazy fly into right field. They have the best manager in the game and the best pitching coach in the game.On paper they dont have half the talent of the Mets, the Phillies, possibly the Braves, the Brewers, most definaltly the Cubs, but you know what, there they sit at 40-27. The only way to explain it to say they got twice heart and want-to of all those aforementioned teams.

I think it has more to do with LaRussa being forced to stay sober this year. I say, put him back on the hooch!

Is that the best a Cubs fan can come up with? Alcohol jokes? If not for alcohol they would have shut Wrigley down 2 decades ago when whatever his name was manager went off on those drunks.

A stadium filled with drunk, rowdy 'bleacher bums' does not equal to a high-profile skipper being found passed out drunk at an intersection in his vehicle while it was still running. That being said, it seems the Central is the cream of the crop of the NL to this point, but we've all got a long way to go before thumping our chests about anything. As stated in another thread, I'm more concerned about a pitching corps injury or meltdown than this particular injury. Obviously, I would rather that it hadn't happened, but we will enjoy a slight tradeoff in that whoever replaces AS will almost certainly be better on defense.

The Cubs (through 66 games) are 1st in the NL in batting average, on base percentage, runs scored, and ERA.

So consequently, they lead the NL and the majors in the one category that counts the most, wins and losses.

Even without Soriano, I don't forsee them taking a really big dive. The Cards are definitely overachieving, as is usual with LaRussa, but I don't think they'll be able to keep up with the Cubs. They may very well end up being the top contender for the Wild Card however.

This time without Pujols will go a long way toward determining how they do. If they can tread water, they'll be ok.

I don't see the Cubs dropping off much, either. There's more than enough talent on that team to overcome the loss of Soriano. And as mentioned above, you probably just got an upgrade defensively in the outfield.

I don't have to wait for a slump. All one needs to do is objectively look at their roster.
